I have been using this pedal for the past 4 -5 years and this problem hasn't occurred, but i had to stay off practice for about 2 months, and when i began to resume practice this started happening. There are no other problems with tone creation, editing and no other damage whatsoever. During the two months that I didn't use it,the unit was kept safely in a cupboard in a pedal Bag and covered in bubblewrap. I haven't tried anything other than set the patches on new banks, but the problem persists. But it doesnt seem to affect the older patches which i set.
I had the same issue. I contacted Roland and they suggested using only a roland/boss power supy for the unit as some supplies can cause issues. They also recommended a factory reset, which wound up fixing my issue. Here is a link for how to do a factory reset on the unit.

Most PROBABLE is the output jack either has been broken (common due to mishandling and accidents with cables such as stepping on the plug while plugged into the pedal) or the soldering of the jack in the pedal has broken loose. Less common is a circuit board crack in the vicinity of the jack. Open pedal and inspect for the above suggestions.

Make sure you use Alkaline battery and NOT rechargeable type... the rechargeable battery will NOT work in the pedals (their voltage is lower even though they are labeled as 9 volt replacement).
Other internal problems can be due to cracked circuit board or broken solder joints. These are very common as people step on the cables when plugged in. This breaks the connection inside. A fuzzy sound often occurs when one of the contacts is marginal due to bad solder at the jack terminals.
