Unfortunately this model of router has no support for directly connecting anything other than a printer that already supports Ethernet.

Since that's not the case with most consumer printers you will need to buy a "Print Server" These are made by all the main manufacturers, and come with a collection of interfaces, USB / Parallel of the printer, and Ethernet or WiFi of the network side.

They all pretty much do the same thing so go for one that meets your needs.

You cannot just add network printer on Windows XP without the printer software. You can only install it on Windows 7 with no software.

You need to get the canon MX870 software and run it on the computer you want to print files from. 'Before you do it, make you have already setup the printer to connect to your router and also make sure that it is connected to your router before you run the software.

http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/printers_multifunction/office_all_in_one_inkjet_printers/pixma_mx870#DriversAndSoftware

Select Windows XP (NOT WINDOWS XP 64) then download and install the first file "mp68-win-mx870-1_04-ea24.exe" Run it and it will show you options. Choose setup wireless there you go! Make sure you are connected to the-same router the printer is connected to.

Please rate 4 stars if this solved your problem. Thanks

you might need to fiddle around with the usb virtual printer port configuration , when you add printer. when adding a printer, uncheck the install automatically tick box, then on the NEXT page click on the drop down list of "use the following port" and try virtual port. it might work.

Usb upgrade

Let's see if I understand - you have added an additional card into the computer which adds USB v2 ports. Then I guess you are plugging a USB Wireless card into those ports.

Can you see the speed of the wireless connection? If you 't have an icon in the lower right hand corner for the card, hover over it with the mouse, or right click. Otherwise, go to Control Panel, Network Connection and look for the wireless card there.

Right clicking either one should show you the speed between your computer and the router.

Most wired connections will be 100 Mbps. Depending on the card and the router, wireless will be 10, 56, or 108 Mbps.

Wireless speed depends on many things, such as:
1) distance from the computer to the router
2) number of solid objects, such as walls, floors, or metal
3) possible interference from other wireless routers in the area

Do you think any of these are at work here? If you can reposition either the router or the computer, it may help.

Wireless is cool, but the best possible speeds will always come from a wired connection. I have my desktop computer wired, but my laptop wireless. When I go wireless, my speeds drop.

Tell me a bit about the equipment you're using, perhaps we can squeeze a bit more out of it.

Hope that helps!

I have acer aspire laptop computer model 3692WLM1 windows media center edition I wish to purchase a HP DESKJET D4200 series printer will this be compatable for my laptop

Hey doodee,

According to information provided by the manufacturer, this model HP printer requires Windows 2000, Windows XP Home or Windows XP Professional in order to function. Apart from the obvious cosmetic changes and some extra added functionality, Windows XP Media Center Edition may be treated as basic Windows XP in many instances. As such, this printer should be compatible with your computer. Please keep in mind however, that you may need to perform driver and software updates in order to guarantee functionality.

Hope this helps you out.

Sincerely,
Aaron
