Updated: had rubber, it's actually more of a plastic smell. I have a 3 year old LG WM3987HW and two days ago it started to smell like burning plastic while it was on the drying cycle. Ran it again yesterday and it smelled like burning rubber near the beginning of the wash cycle. It didn't smell in the drum, the outlet wasn't smoking/smelling either and the wire wasn't even warm. Any idea of what could be wrong with it?
You have something between inner and outer tub remove top cover smell coming from air vents of outer tub then that is were it is
fun job its has to come all apart
If that is were smell is coming from the only remedy would be to replace something is over heating not saying once replaced you may have same problem We have not ran in to this complaint coming from electronics Board your speaking of is main relay board
It will get warm board is covered in epoxy so this is what your smelling may be getting ready to fail change board

SOURCE: LG TROMM - awful smell while washer is running
Use the aafesh tablets as instructed, this will clear hoses that have developed some mold, also inspect drain at the wall, these get moldy and as machine runs, smell comes out of there as well.

Did you get this seal problem resolved, by yourself or did you call in a repair-person? If you did it yourself, was it difficult? Same problem found 12/17/10 - Thank you
SOURCE: LG WM2487*M Washer smells like burning rubber in spin cycle
Smells like, I mean sounds like, a belt is burning either from friction caused by a bad bearing, or, a loose belt is slipping on the pully a bit, causing it to heat up from the friction.

Sorry, my boyfriend says its more of a burning plastic smell. We called a repairman who lied and said he smelt the burning plastic smell the instant he walked into our house (we haven't run the washer in two weeks) and that the burning smell is normal. If it were brand new i'd believe that but since it's basically 3 years old and it had never smelt like burning plastic until now, i highly doubt this smell is "normal".
when he opened it up, my boyfriend believed the smell came from a black box inside the machine. The "repairman" refused to open up the part since he didn't see any burn marks on it. There are no burn marks because we stopped the machine and unplugged it the instant we smelt it.
The box is your main board electronics has no rubber that will burn epoxy coated board may smell like formaldehyde only rubber in washer is front boot seal if bearings of inner tub are going out it will rub on seal causing the smell
if it was the board washer would stop working take top off washer and run it and watch for smoke or smell for it you will find the area of were its coming from
i'm sorry i misspoke on the original post, it's more of a burning plastic smell. The piece my boyfriend thought the scent came from (that the repairman wouldn't open) appears to be the black enclosure that is part of the dryer component. We had it running with the top off, saw no smoke but the entire house smelt like burnt plastic which the repairman said was "normal". It can't be normal if it only started up after 3 years of use with no "plasticky" smell after the first few times we ran it.
