Samsung hp-s5053 bottom half goes black intermittently. Picture is fine, bottom half goes black, then picture comes back. Is there a replacement part I can try before disposal?
The Tcon board or the LCD panel is faulty. Can confirm by replace the Tcon board .

Check settings in menu for correctness. Change input device to something you know works for sure. If problem persists, it might need attention by a qualified service technician.
It appears that the Main bd is bad. Try using Component cables instead of the HDMI cables and see if there is a change. If there is a change to normal picture then try another HDMI cable. If the problem returns then replace the Main bd. There three Main bds for this basic model number. You will need the version# found on the right side of the set to order the correct bd.
its the lower buffer card.. (y buffer lower board) they cost about $90.. i changed mine myself on my samsung hpr-4262 42 inch plasma.. pretty easy,, took approz 20 minutes.. the card has 3 ribbon cables and 3 other connectors and 1 screw.. removing all the screws out of the back pannel took the most time.. i found the repair manual for my tv on line for $13 (download PDF file) the manual had a trouble shooting section and what board to replace for each problem.. got the manual from here http://store.payloadz.com/ ordered the replacement board from www.partstore.com
Try to adjust the Vscan or/and Vs down about 5-10V on the Power Supply board. If you got extended warranty, just let the warranty depot shop help you to do it.
For the "humming" noise, may need to replace the Power Supply board to fix it.
Normallly, if the format button on the remote for the television does not achieve the desired affect, then, a cable box or a satelite box is where the change needs to be made.
For example:
A Motorola Cable box needs to be set up to go to a wide screen when an analog signal is detected.
It's difficult to determine the repair without knowing the hook up of the peripherals.
