Generator electrical problem

The generator starts and runs perfectly. When I switch the 2 breakers to the ON position, the engine loads excessively the trips the breaker moments later. Does this sound like a voltage regulator problem?

No it sounds like the engine is losing power, as the RPM drops the voltage drops, this increases the current load and that trips the breaker.

I need the workshop manual of perkins england 2332/1800 diesel engine of genset generator Olympia Gep150 controlled by Fg wilson uk.best regards

We are Perkins diesel generator OEM and can provide 22KW to 1800KW Perkins diesel generator including open type, silent type and container type genset. Each genset has its user's manual.

Normal starting procedure of Perkins Generator set

1. As far as possible do not start the generator set under load conditions.

2. Transfer the key switch to the starting (STAR) position. The engine should start immediately.

3. After the engine starts, return the key switch to the running (RUN) position. If the engine has not started after 10 seconds, turn the key switch back into operation and (RUN) for 10 seconds. Then repeat steps 2 and 3. If the engine is still unable to start after three attempts, please find out why.

4. After engine starts, follow steps 4.a and 4.b.

A. Check the oil pressure.
B. Check the machine for leaks.
C. Make sure the battery is charged.
D. After running the engine for five minutes, check the generator monitoring system. Make sure the engine works properly before loading.

Note: do not use ether-like spray starting aids in cold weather. Otherwise, it could lead to explosion and personal injury.

The use of water jacket heaters or extra battery capacity improves the machine's start-ability below 10 ?.

Craftsman 5600 watt generator AVR Location? It does not appear to be inside the cover of alternator.

The most common cause of portable generators failing to produce electricity is from the loss of residual magnetism.

Generators work by moving electrical conductors through a magnetic field. Your generator does not have magnets. The magnetic field is created by taking some of the generator output voltage and converting it to DC and feeding it to a coil to make an electromagnet.

When there is a small amount of magnetism left over from the last time the generator was running, it is called residual magnetism. The little bit of magnetism is enough to produce a small amount of electricity. This small amount of electricity is needed to create an even stronger electric magnet. As the engine turns this magnet moving its electric field, through the stator windings, your generator produces even more power.

When the residual magnetism is lost, the generator will produce no power at start-up. This residual magnetism can be lost naturally from not being used or from the load on your generator being connected when the generator is shut off. It can also happen from running a generator with no load for too long.

Generators need to work and it helps maintain that residual magnetism. When they are running, a load should be connected to it. It helps create an even stronger magnetic field. Before you shut it off, turn off the switch or breaker to disconnect the load. If you shut off a generator with the load connected, it can essentially drain or demagnetize the electromagnet. Try and avoid running out of fuel.

How to fix it:

There are a few methods of restoring a generator residual magnetism

12 Volt Generator Battery Method

Locate the voltage regulator for your generator.
Unplug the two wires that connect to the generator brushes. Normally one is red and the other is black or white.
Connect the black or white to the generator ground battery terminal.
Plug in a light, turn on the generator breaker or switch and start the motor.
Connect the battery +12 volts (red cable) to the red wire on the terminals you removed for three seconds.
Remove your wires and replace the plug. The generator should now be producing power again.

Generator will not stay running

The toggle switch automatically resets all faults when it is turned to the off position. I would turn the toggle switch off, turn off the breaker on the generator and then turn off all the loads in the house except a few lights. Turn the generator breaker back on, then turn the toggle switch back to automatic. If it starts and stays running, you were overloading the generator. Turn on other loads slowly and keep track of what is on so you don't overload it again. If it still does not stay on, you may have a problem with the panel. Let me know what happens.

Perkins 20 kva diesel generator runs and stops in about 2 minutes.alternator failure is displayed on screen.

Ensure any engine control switch is set to the run position, with the load disengaged. Manually set the air shut off valve (if fitted) to the run position (see Fig. 18), Turn the key switch to the start position, which will energize the solenoid allowing the engine to crank over for a few seconds then start.

Check the instrument panel is showing normal running oil pressure, and the ammeter for charge to the engine batteries.
Allow the engine to run for five minutes checking the instruments are reading correctly. Stop the engine and check the oil and coolant levels, replenish if necessary.

I have a troybilt 7000 gas generator that trips the main output breaker when under a load after 5 minutes

1. Make sure that the generator limit is not being exceeded.
2. Try checking and raising the rpm. If the engine can not sustain the load from the generator, it can/will trip the breaker.
3. If the carb is dirty or the engine runs poorly it can trip the breaker. Tune up the engine, clean the carb, make carb adjustments to correct substandard running conditions.

The generator kicked the breaker of and was smoking and smelled like electrical

What type of load (electrical) was hooked up to this generation?? If the surge voltage and current was exceeded above the generator maximum for any length of time. There problems, it could be the regulator, insulation burnt off the windings.

I am taking a guess here. Now, 7100 Watts is it typical surge wattage. This mean that the generator will deliver 7100 Watt (voltage times current) this is know as the power factor. The actual operating load would be 6800 Watts and I would even operator the generator at its peak wattage. Something in the neighborhood of 10--15% less the peak wattage. Therefore a good positive theatrical Wattage would be 5800 to 6350 operating wattage. Then this generator would run all day.

Just remember Ohm's Law. Current plays a big factor in loading of a generator while the operation voltage is at 120 AC Volts. Example: electric motor; Now electric motor when starting will pull three time its operation current. Operating current for a 1/2 HP AC motor is 6 amperes but start this electric motor will require 18 amperes. This is one reason why they starting capacitors on smaller electric motors. Larger three phase electric motor can literal stop a generator cold...in its tracks. It put such a large demand on the generator it stops the engine powering the generator. I have seen crankshaft break because the generator could handle the heavy current load.

Remember, any time you are running a small gas powered generator. All ways figure what the load and surge current load will be before hooking up any generator. Normally this is figured in VA (volt/amps). Wish you lock. GB...stewbison

DEWALT DG6300B NO POWER OUTPUT

Hello avid.....

If there is no power to the receptacles:

1. Turn the circuit breaker switches off and disconnect all electrical loads from the generator.

2. Turn the circuit breakers on and test the GFCI's by following the procedures in this manual

on page 1 -

TO TEST A GFCI:

Start the generator. Turn the auto idle switch off. Push in the TEST button (A) on the receptacle.

The RESET button (B) will pop out. Power is now off at the receptacle.

If the RESET button does not pop out, the GFCI is not working. Do not run

generator until the problem can be corrected. To restore power to receptacle,

push the RESET button in. If the RESET button pops out during operation,
stop the generator and check the generator and equipment for defects.

3. Place the voltage selector to the 120 Volt only positions (unless you are using a tool that

requires 240 Volts).

4. Turn the idle control switch off.

5. Turn the circuit breaker(s) off and reconnect the electrical loads. Be sure that the plugs are

securely connected to the receptacles.

6. Turn the circuit breaker(s) on.

7. If there is still no power at the receptacles, take the generator to an authorized DEWALT
service center. To locate a DEWALT service center nearest to you, call 1-800-4-DEWALT

I can't remember if you plug in the generator to the electric panel first (with power turned to the generator and off of the main line feed) and then start the generator, or start the generator and then...

OK, by talking about a plug, I am assuming you have made a double male plug to hook the generator to the electric panel. This is not really advised, because it is so easy for it to be plugged into an outlet by someone not knowing what it is far, and getting electricuted. Now, away from preaching, and to helping.
It is best to hook it to the generator and then crank it, so you are not dealing with a load when you plug the systems together. When your power is restored, it would be good to install a plug to your electrical box and have it go to a disconnect like is on your outside A/C unit. It moves you away from the hot wires.
Hope your power is on soon!
