It could be one of several problems:
1. Bad hard drive (reasonable likely depending on age); does the hard drive make noise or spin?
2. Loose hard drive cable (less likely)
3. Virus (likely)
If it doesn't boot at all you can open up the back and make sure the hard drive is "seated" properly - that means all the connections are firmly in place. If that doesn't take care of it you will have to try and reinstall the OS.
