My maytag refrigerator crushed ice will not switch back to cubes

If you look at the bottom out side area of the ice cube bucket/auger assembly, you will see a metal rod going front to back. That is the shift rod for cubes/crushed ice. Make sure it is free. Then look at the back of the refrigerator where the end of that rod goes into a square hole. There is a magnetic solenoid in that hole that shifts the rod for selection. The solenoid coil is either bad, unplugged, or for some reason stuck and not shifting that rod. That's where the problems is located.

There is an metal arm that extends out behind the ice bucket that moves up and down when you press the cubed/crushed ice buttons. You need to take the ice bucket out and check the hardware. It's possible that some ice has managed to form in the unit and are blocking the motion. Remove any ice and check if the arm moves freely when you press the buttons on the refrigerator. Similarly, you should check if there is ice blocking the forward and back motion of the plunger in the freezer that bar sits on. This plunger is right next to the auger motor.

You have a solenoid switch which switches the dispenser back and forth from crushed to cube. It could be stuck or not working or the parts connecting it could be disconnected or broken. You will have to observe to see if any parts are moving and if any noise is coming from the solenoid. Crushed ice is the default position and the solenoid is energized to cube ice.
Remove the dispenser cover by gently prying starting at the bottom going round and round a little at a time to prevent from breaking it. When it's off the screws will be exposed to access the other components.

I believe your dispenser board is defective. The fact that the cubed ice light remains on even when you ask for crushed indicates to me that a relay or switch in the board is remaining engaged. You possibly can unplug the refrigerator and remove the plug on the dispenser board and reinsert the plug to see if resetting or re-seating the dispenser board will resolve the problem. With your model number I can find a diagram which may help.

Sounds like the control module is u/s or the motor is u/s. Try switching off and on at the mains. If this does not cure it then you can try to unplug and plug back the ice motor, if you have access to it, if not call service engineer.

I slid out the tray, found the lever in the back where the rod went in, pulled it down, reinserted the ice tray, and IT WORKED! At first I thought I broke the lever, because I had to hold it down with a knife while I was inserting the tray, but it just must have been stuck.

There is an opening next to the auger that dispenses the ice. In there there is a lever that must move up and down. It actually seats the metal rod on the bottom of the ice maker and controls cube or crushed. Make sure the lever is down (cube position) when you return the basket to the freezer. pull the bucket and check the solenoid on the back wall this is what shifts the bucket to crushed and cubed

Check and make sure your switch is okay. Some have a switch that controls whether you want crushed or cubes. If it is defective replace it.
