To look up the steel ligter serial number is very easy ,I specialize in buying and selling Cartier watches. I've seen fakes with all the correct marks and a serial number, but that doesn't mean they are legitimate. If the watch was registered by Cartier when it was sold or if it has been sent in to Cartier for service Cartier will be able to verify it is authentic, but be aware that if the watch was not originally sold in North America or was not registered when sold (fairly common) it can still be authentic. Some sellers offer the Cartier quartz model for sale and only state that the watch has a quartz movement, but fail to mention if it has a Cartier quartz movement. If it has a replacement movement in it the watch is technically authentic, but not original and is not worth as much as one with an original or a genuine Cartier replacement movement. The biggest mistake I've seen amateur Cartier buyers make is using the Cartier micro-script signature on the Roman numeral to verify authenticity. Indeed this is a good indicator, but not the best indicator as there were many Cartier watches produced prior to the technology required to make the micro-script possible and not all Cartier watches have Roman numerals for the dial to have the micro-script signature. Furthermore, the micro-script is not always located at the same place and if the dial has been refinished it may not appear at all. Another common problem is actually caused by language differences, i.e. "all original versus "authentic". A watch can be authentic without being all original. Unless someone has owned the watch since it was new and it has never left their sight it is impossible for them to state the watch is "all original" as a part could have been replaced at some point in time -- even without their knowledge. Your best bet is to buy from a reputable seller even if you have to pay slightly more money. -- Cartier_Specialist

First of all, Cartier does not police watches that come into their store. They do not ask for bills of sale, etc., as said by someone here. And an aside, you can have 50 bills of sale, the law is very clear a stolen item that you paid for does not make it yours and if returned to it's rightful owner, you are out the money you paid for it (unless you get the money back from the one who sold it to you, good luck with that!)
Secondly, I have the same watch as yours, that I bought on eBay and I brought it to Cartier. They did register the serial number in my name and address, Now maybe if Cartier decided to break their own rules and opened their files to the police who may be looking for your watch in the thousands registered with them because the owner of your watch was the Police Commissioner's wife then there maybe a chance the police would knock at your door if the wife didn't already get paid by her insurance company for the loss!
Back to my watch, you may have noticed the links on the back next to the deployment buckle of the watch are not in gold and ss but just stainless steel. The Panthere which now discontinued by Cartier comes with 5 or 6 links on either side of the gold and ss (at least that is what I see on eBay and that is also what I have). Cartier takes the watch and calls you in a couple of weeks to let you know how much it will be cost.
Here is where my memory fails..I think I needed 2 or 3 links added. Two prices were offered to me, one for the gold and stainless links which was like $720 or the stainless which was like $175 ( I know it was under two hundred) which I opted for. When I picked it up it was in (no added cost) a really nice red suede like travel bag with Cartier in gold letters on it and 2 gold colored snaps. I have seen these selling on eBay for $30 -50. EBay also has links for sale but at about $125 each and you have them put on by a jeweler$. Hello. Cartier cost less, they put them on and you get the travel thing. Go to Cartier.

Cartier will not sell parts to you. You must take it to Cartier. How did you happen to have screws out of your watch?

Michael DeVito---PLEASE STOP telling people to take their Cartier to a "watch repair shop" !! If they do that instead of taking it to a Cartier shop, they will destroy the value of the watch. Once it is opened by a non-Cartier shop, Cartier will NOT stand behind it, won't even touch it and they can tell if it's been opened by someone non-Cartier trained. A 'regular' watch opening tool will damage a Cartier. And then pop goes the weasel, the watch is now worthless. Yes, they will destroy a fake that comes in their shop, and that is their right to do so; it protects the value of all those folks who have REAL Cartiers and paid big money for them. I'm sure you mean to help, but please, please stop saying "take it to a watch repair shop; you are advising these people to ruin their very valuable watches ! Anyone who has a Cartier can 'Google' Cartier website, click on U.S., then find a store near you & call them to discuss your watch. They'll be happy to help. A tune-up for your Cartier costs roughly $65.00 in a Cartier boutique, you should do that if you've bought a used one. No, I don't work for Cartier, but I own one and despise that so much bad information is out here about these watches. A genuine Cartier is not just an investment but a responsibility. There is no way to purchase any parts of CARTIER watches online, except on eBay, but you will have to hunt for it and maybe never get. Cartier are fitting their spares themselves only. For that you have to contact Cartier, explain what the problem is, and then send the watch to Cartier. Cartier is located in London. You will find address on internet. Rate me, please.

If that is a real Cartier watch and you have lost the crown which is the piece that you use to either wind or set the time then you will need to send it back to Cartier. They dont sell parts to watch repair shops! :-)

If it's a replica then you can take it to a reputable watch repair shop and they can install a generic crown!
