If the scratch is not to deep you can polish it out with lots of  elbow grease and cigarette ashes. Their are also products n the market to polish scratches out of glass. A really light rubbing compound like for 3M might work.

SOURCE: What happens if my scanner only scans half a page?

Hi,It could be that you are running out of memory. Try using a lower quality scan setting to determine if that is the issue. (If more of the document is scanned then Memory is likely your problem.) If not try reloading the software.

SOURCE: epson v500 adf - feed starts, then stops after

Welcome to FixYa!

1. Make sure your documents meet the following conditions before loading them into the Automatic Document Feeder:

  • The ink is dry.
  • The document has no holes and is not ripped or wrinkled.
  • The document has no staples, paper clips, or other objects attached to it; these may damage the feeder mechanism.
  • The document has no folds within 0.2 inch (5 mm) from the edges.
  • The document has no cut-out areas.
  • The document is not a multipart form or bound.
  • The document has no rear carbon coating.
Make sure you don't load more than 30 sheets of Letter, Legal, A4, or B5 size paper in the Automatic Document Feeder. Load only documents that meet the following specifications in the Automatic Document Feeder.
Size Width 3.94 to 8.5 inches (100 to 215.9 mm)
Length 5 to 14 inches (127 to 355.6 mm) Thickness 0.002 to 0.006 inches (0.07 to 0.16 mm) Weight 12 lb to 21 lb (60 to 105 g/m²) Paper type High-quality bond paper Printing type Documents printed with impact printers, laser printers, or facsimile machines
For the best results, all of the sheets you load at one time should be the same size. If you load sheets of differing sizes, carefully follow the loading and scanning instructions for mixed-size documents.

Remove any documents from the document table and make sure there is no dust on the glass before loading documents in the Automatic Document Feeder.

CAUTION: Do not feed photographs or valuable original artwork into the Automatic Document Feeder. Misfeeding may wrinkle or damage the original. Scan high-quality color or halftone documents on the document table instead.

2. Reset the Scanner.
  • While the scanner is on, unplug the USB cable and the power cord at he back of the scanner.
  • Wait for 2 minutes, then plug it back again.

3. Uninstall and reinstall the drivers.
Uninstall:
  • Click start, control panel, add/remove programs.
  • Scroll down to look for the EPSON scanner files.
  • Right click on the EPSON scanner file, click uninstall.
Note: Uninstall all the ESPON scanner programs that you see.

Scanner leaving black streaks

There are two possible fixes.

Download the latest firmware update by CLICKING HERE

The following is provided by courtesy of Lexmark:
Problem Vertical lines; Auto document feeder scan anomaly; ADF scanning problem; Scan issue; Scanner issue; Visible line; Streaks show on page; solid line down the page; Top to bottom line; Smudge runs down the page; Opaque line; Broken line; Bar all the way down the page Solution Overview

This article provides the self-diagnostic steps necessary to evaluate top-to-bottom streaks that appear when copying or scanning.

Important! This is seldom a scanner hardware failure.

The main reason for this anomaly is debris or marks on the scanner glass that is used for Auto document feeder (ADF) page scans.

Printed or Scanned Page Illustration

copyvertstreaks.jpg

Who should consider this article?

Any user of an MFP or All-In-One printer experiencing the following symptoms:

  • -Vertical lines only when using the Autodocument Feeder (ADF).
  • -Observed with any type of scan job (e-mail, ftp, solutions, fax).
  • -However, normal expected output when the page is scanned from the scanner flatbed.

ADF scan behavior

Think of it this way:

  • -The page is pulled from the ADF.
  • -The moving page slides across an ADF-designated portion of glass.
  • -The image sensor, which is located under the glass, reads and interprets the moving page's contents.
  • -Contamination on this ADF glass is seen by the image sensor for the entire length of the page.
  • -The image processor interprets the image sensor's repeated capture of this contamination as a vertical solid line.
  • -Any ADF scan function now exhibits a vertical line.

adfvertscanline.gif

Suggested Diagnosis and Fix

Step Action 1 Locate the portion of the glass designated for ADF scans.
HINT: The glass location differs by model. This area is often separate from the scanner flatbed. Please reference User's Guide for more information if you are having a difficult time locating this designated area.
2 Perform a visual inspection for any of the following recurring culprits:

  • -Clear adhesive tape
  • -Glue
  • -Ink pen
  • -Paper
  • -Marker
  • -White out
  • -Staples
  • -Environmental dust or dirt
HINT: Ink marks can be especially hard to see and almost translucent at first sight. However, the image sensor (CCD) registers them as a mark. 3 Use a clean, soft, moistened cloth to thoroughly clean and remove any marks or debris. 4 Inspect the underbelly or underside of the ADF for any marks or debris. 5 Perform another scan to see if cleaning the glass alleviated the issue. 6 Repeat the procedure if a vertical line still appears.
Remember! Printing and scanning from the scanner flatbed work fine.
7 This time, place an intentional mark on a blank sheet of paper and take note of its location. Now place that sheet of paper in the ADF and make a copy.
8 Evaluate the distance of the vertical line to the your mark. 9 Inspect that area of the glass for further debris or marks and clean as necessary.

Need user manual and software for a HP ScanJet 4p scanner

HI...................

HP ScanJet 4p Scanners - How to Use the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) gtabseps.gif
gtabblt.gif Tips for Using gtabblt.gif Step 1 - Load the Paper gtabblt.gif Step 2 - Scan the Document gtabblt.gif To Scan a Single Page gtabseps.gif Tips for Using
  • Remove any paper from the copyboard glass before using the ADF.
  • Straighten any curls or wrinkles from documents before putting them on the document tray. If this is not possible, do not scan these documents using the ADF. Instead, use the copyboard glass or make a photocopy of the documents and scan the photocopies.
  • Remove staples, paper clips, and any other materials from documents.
  • Avoid documents with tears, perforations, or punch holes.
  • Do not use the ADF to scan sheets of uncommon paper or other media, such as the following: - transparencies - gummed-backed paper - magazine pages - lightweight ("onionskin") carbons
  • For paper smaller than 5 inches (127 mm) by 7 inches (178 mm) or larger than 14 inches (356 mm) by 8.5 inches (216 mm), use the scanner glass instead of the ADF. Paper smaller than the minimum size may cause a paper jam.
  • For paper lighter than 16 lb bond (60 g/m sq) or heavier than 32 lb bond (120 g/m sq), use the scanner glass instead of the ADF.
  • Before scanning, always push the front of the ADF downward to the scanner to ensure that the magnetic latches are engaged.
Step 1 - Load the Paper Besides the instructions below, quick reference decals on the input tray and access hatch show the order of steps for paper loading.
  1. Turn on the scanner.
  2. Ensure the scanner's scanner glass is free of paper.
  3. Turn the green paper load lever into an upright and open position. Refer to decal number 1 located on the ADF access hatch.
  4. Put the top end of the paper stack face up on the input tray. Refer to decal number 2 and pointer arrows on the ADF input tray.
  5. Push the paper stack up against the green document guide and slide it right against the green registration stop, which is in the middle of the paper load window.
  6. Turn the green paper load lever 45 degrees into the closed position. This will secure the paper stack. Refer to decal number 3 on the ADF access hatch. The ADF is now loaded and ready for scanning.
Step 2 - Scan the Document The ADF works with many software packages that are compatible with the HP ScanJet color scanners. To scan a document, refer to the user's manual of the software package being used. To Scan a Single Page To scan a single page while the ADF is installed on the scanner, do the following.
  1. Remove any pages from the ADF input tray.
  2. Raise the ADF.
  3. Place the page on the scanner's copyboard glass.
  4. Lower the ADF all the way and do the scan.

ADF paper jam, when there is none

If you are receiving an Error Code 103 or a Paper Jam error, but there are no pages in the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder), follow the steps below:
  1. Close the scanning application (such as PaperPort)
  2. Turn off the scanner and the computer
  3. If you have a combination ADF with a Flatbed scanner, unplug the ADF cable from the base of the scanner
  4. Plug the ADF cable back in
  5. Turn on the scanner power
  6. Turn on the computer
  7. Try scanning again
For a Paper Jam or Error Code 103, make sure that the ADF cable in the rear is connected to the scanner base. Check the flatbed to make sure that it is clear. A page incorrectly placed on the flatbed may interfere with a page feeding through the ADF.

If your scanner stops scanning due to a paper jam in the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF), a warning dialog box appears after a few moments.

To clear a paper jam:
  1. Open the Automatic Document Feeder cover.
  2. Remove the jammed paper and close the cover.
If you are receiving a paper jam error, or if the scanner is running continuously, check to make sure the paper sensor arm is not stuck down.
  1. Open the Automatic Document Feeder cover.
  2. Look for the small black plastic arm
  3. When you press on this arm, it should move freely up and down
  4. If the arm is stuck down, please contact Technical Support for troubleshooting options
  5. Close the ADF cover.

My Visioneer 8650 flatbed scanner with auto document feed gives a message when I try to scan a document, telling me to move the switch on the bottom from the "locked" to "unlocked" position. The lock is...

Actually a very common problem. Try the following:
1. Power down then re-power up the scanner.
2. Try slightly moving scanner. Sometimes a small change works to fix.
3. Change one of your scan setting to flatbed scan (not adf). Do a test scan under this setting. This will usually kick start scanner unit to unlock.
4. Last resort, by does also work...give it a medium slap on the side, sometimes unjams the scanner light.
5. Super last resort, power down over night, it almost always works the next day. (could be that lock up is heat related to scan lamp, dont know but just a guess).
Excellent scanner, so worth the effort to try these fixes.

Vertical lines when scanning using automatic document feeder...Glass is clean

It is not in the glass. More than likely it is in the rollers of the ADF feeder. If you open the cover of the ADF feeder you can see there are 3 screws (! is found under another small cover furthest to the back of the machine. Once these three screws are removed you can left the entire ADF feeder from the unit. You will then be able to clean all the rollers. Do not use alcohol as this will dry our your rollers and cause them to eventually crack. Just use soap and water to clean the rollers. Then reinstall the ADF feeder assembly back on the machine.

How do I scan a bunch of originals from the tray and get 1 file for each page?

Loading originals to scan
Use these instructions to load originals into your device for scanning. For the best quality
scans, use the flatbed scanner. See Selecting media for the automatic document feeder
(ADF) for guidelines on choosing original documents for scanning.
Loading originals onto the flatbed scanner
1. Make sure that the automatic document feeder (ADF) input tray is free of media.
2. Lift the flatbed scanner lid.
3. Place the original document face-down on the flatbed scanner with the top, left corner of
the document at the lower-right corner of the glass.
4. Gently close the lid.
5. The document is ready to be scanned.
CAUTION To prevent damaging the device, do not allow the scanner lid to fall onto the flatbed scanner
surface. Always close the scanner lid when the device is not in use.
Loading originals into the automatic document feeder (ADF)
input tray
Note The ADF capacity is up to 50 sheets of 75 g/m2 (20 lb) media (depending on the thickness of
the media), or fewer sheets if the stack fills the ADF.
The minimum size for media in the ADF is 127 by 127 mm (5 by 5 inches). For smaller sizes
use the flatbed scanner. The maximum size for media in the ADF is 215.9 by 381 mm (8.5 by
15 inches).
1. Make sure that the flatbed scanner contains no media.
2. Close the flatbed scanner cover and put the top end of the stack of originals into the ADF
input tray, with the media stack face-up and the first page to be scanned on top of the
stack.
3. Slide the stack into the ADF input tray until it does not move any farther.
