SOURCE: Sears garage door opener, chain adjustment

Loosen the inner nut on the trolley. (That is the lock nut). Then tighten the outer nut on the trolley to increase tension. The outer nut on the trolley is closest to the garage door. The chain tension should be 1/2 inch off the rail at midspan. (The chain is fastened to a threaded bolt on to the trolley. The threaded bolt has an inner and outer nut). Hope this helps.

SOURCE: Garage door shakes as if off balance when closing

  • The garage door may be out of balance or a spring may be broken. Close the door and use the emergency release handle to disconnect the trolley. Open and close the door manually. A properly balanced door should stay at any point of travel while being supported entirely by it's spring(s). If it does not, disconnect the garage door opener and call a garage door professional. Do not increase force to operate the garage door opener.

SOURCE: How do I tighten sagging garage door chain?

I think you have more problems than just a sagging chain. It is most likely sagging because the bronze bushing at the gear and sprocket assembly is bad. It lets the sprocket lean forward and loosens the chain. You will also need to remove the cover from the motor unit and check the drive gear. It is a white gear just in front of the motor and is most likely stripped.

SOURCE: My garage door sometimes gets stuck and then goes

Don't tighten the chain. It sounds like you have either a broken door spring or the drive gear in the motor unit is going bad. Release the opener from the door and operate it by hand. It should be easy enough to raise that your wife can do it with no problems and it should stay put when released about waist to shoulder high.

SOURCE: I just installed a craftsman garage door opener

When the door is opening the chain will be tight on one side and slack on the other. When it is closing it will be just the opposite. It is important that you do not over tighten the chain. I suppose the wrong chain could be shipped with the opener but it wouldn't be common.

I can not get the chain to fit on the 3/4hp garage door opener I purchased form Sears

There is typically an adjustment on the chain that allows you to tighten the chain as it stretches with time.

The adjuster should look like a piece of threaded rod that is in-line with the chain. It should have a nut on it that takes a 7/16" or 1/2" open-end wrench to tighten or loosen the chain.

Sometimes, the adjustment mechanism comes from the factory in a state that makes the chain too tight. Try loosening the adjuster until the chain will fit and then make final adjustments.

Because thus is a chain with a sprocket at the motor end and another sprocket at the door end, sometimes more slack in the chain is required to get it seated properly in both sprockets. A helper may be required to help you get the chain in both sprockets simultaneously without too much slack in the chain between sprockets, but with just enough slack to prevent binding.

Another thing at which you should take a look, is the armature in which the chain rides. This is typically in 2 or more pieces in the box, requiring the installer to slip one inside the other. Ensure that the joints are fully engaged, which would make the length of chain required a bit shorter.

The last thing you want to inspect is that the chain in installed to the inside of any chain guards. These are present, typically along the longer spans on the sides of the long arm, to ensure that if a chain breaks or becomes bound and pops off a sprocket (think of popping a bicycle chain when you were a kid), it will not fall to the ground, or hit your car or a person. If you inadvertently routed the chain to the outside of one or more of these guards, your chain will certainly be too short.

I hope this helps!

The garage door will open and then close then open and then the light starts to flash it's a Merlin 230t

This just happened to me. The issue was that the chain that the motor moves back and forth to open/close the door needed to be tightened as the tension had become slack, so the door was hitting the ground hard when it closed and the system automatically raised the door. I closed the door by adjusting the downward travel and then tightened the chain tension by twisting the bit at the of the chain (you'll see it and can use your fingers to do this), once done, then it was a matter of adjusting the upward and downward travel knobs and testing the door to make sure the door was back to normal.

I need to tighten the chain

bfree73_20.jpg
After checking it becomes necessary to adjust the chain tension:
Place the vehicle on the rear support stand Loosen the nut (1).
bfree73_21.jpg
ATTENTION centering wheel fixed references are provided (2-3) in the locations identified on the tensioner arm fork, before the wheel. Loosen the two locknuts (4). Act on the (5) and adjust the chain slack, on both sides of the vehicle, which coincide with the same references (2-3). Tighten the two locknuts (4). Tighten the nut (1). Check the chain slack

Hope this will help you.

There are adjusting nuts on the trolley. The chain should have a little slack. Do not overtighten. One side will always hang a little lower than the other. The lowest side should be about 1/4 inch above the rail.

How do you take up the slack in the chain at the bottom of the blade?

You didn't speciy the brand or model, so this is generic. On the right side of the saw there are ususlly two nuts on the sprocket cover. Loosen them enough for the bar on the saw to move up and down. Then, looking at the bottom of the bar from the front, you'll see a slotted screw which loosens or tightens the chain slack.

Hold the bar up by the tip and using a long heavy screwdriver, tighten (to the right) that screw until you see/feel the chain tightening on the bar.

Not too tight. You should be able to put on a pair of gloves and grasp the chain on the top and pull it toward you easily.

By the same token there should be no place where the chain droops away from the bar. If you grasp the chain with a thumb and forefinger it should pull away from the bar a 1/4 to 1/2 ".

Holding the bar up still, tighten the two nuts firmly so the chain will not become loose again.

The hotter the chain gets during sawing the more it will stretch. Be prepared to tighten it occasionally.
