SOURCE: Playstation 3 audio connection into Yamaha HTR-6040 AV Receiver
Solved problem with Yamaha HTR-6040 AV Receiver. My daughter had inadvertently changed the program to "Direct Stereo" mode which allows sources to bypass the decoders and DSP processors so you can listen to 2-Channel PCM and Analog sources. Nothing to decode digital audio in this setting!

this sounds strange, but is true. you need to run your digital audio optical cable from your tv to your receiver (after, of course, connecting tv/receiver via hdmi). so, hdmi from blue ray to rec - hdmi from rec to tv - then optical from tv back to rec. it's round about, but that is how yamaha says (and the only way it works) to do it.
SOURCE: optical audio from cable box to receiver
Do you mean the optical digital audio output from the cable box? This is so you can listen to Digital sound from cable tv broadcast, First go to the cable box remote control, select setup or menu to find audio, then select audio output, check digital audio, not mts or stereo, this should enable to optical output instead of the typical 2 channel red and white left and right RCA analog audio outputs, sometimes different cable boxes vary, but most require you to enable the optical output via the method listed above.

As long as you continue to have both HDMI and optical outputs connected at same time from the cable box, it will probably always choose the default as HDMI. If you do not want to change any connections then the best thing to do in this case is to always leave the cable box turned on. Otherwise, disconnect the HDMI and connect it to the TV by component video.

I went to the HDTV plasma manual. It stated the only way the digital optical audio output would work (from this TV) was to go to the menu, select audio and turn off the TV speakers. Basically, it had nothing to do with the technics receiver.
