I had more previous Kindle Paperwhite for over four years and it has finally failed. Bought a new one and need to transfer over the books from the old one. When I set up the new one, it did so as "Diane's Kindle 3" so the books didn't carry over. Thanks for your assistance.
Should be able to go to your amazon account and download from there.

As long as they are both registered to the same account. You can transfer them by going to 'Manage Your Kindle' or they will be archived, as long as you downloaded the books via Amazon.

It isn't possible to do it that way. Your friend would need to sign into their own kindle account and "deregister" their kindle.(watch for this if you buy a 2nd hand kindle - has to be unregistered). You would then need to register your friend's kindle on your own account. That would allow you to share YOUR library but not his/hers. Then of course all ebooks would have to be bought through your account. Simpler to just lend him/her your kindle.

Contact Kindle directly and get a technician on line to walk you through the process.
