We had this same issue and what the problem ended up being was a bad evaporator fan blade. The bearings were bad. You shouldn't be able to wiggle shaft back n forth but this one we could move all over place. After fan got going it began to wobble allowing blade to hit shroud.

The noise is likely the defrost heater coming on. This melts the ice on the evaporator coil. The melting ice is the noise you hear and maybe the panel flexing from the heat of the heater. This is normal.
hi doug,
with the amana of that age there are several weird noises, be glad you have only one. that aside
ill tell you all of em...
a clear pop..... usually after defrost its the compressor starting cold as they say.
a knock ( very much like you should answer the door) is the plastic liner popping back into place in the freezer, after defrost.
Then ther is the knock of the water solonoid, but that would be more than once a day.
you might be able to remedy these, by changing the box postion a bit,,, i know sound stupid but i was the old lonely for 15 years and this one was always tough to diagnos it never happened whiles the service guy is there.... so i bought one....
Sounds like the overload/relay is going out . If the noise is a " click " , replace the o/relay after checking the 3 terminals on compressor for continuity and each terminal to ground ( copper tubing ) .
im sorry to tell you, but the sound is probobly normal. fridges these days make some weird noises. they started making noises when they changed the gas to R34a. you may be able to get a noise ruduction kit for your model. they are not too fun to install
sounds like the compressor vibration dampers are wearing out. the dampers are the rubber washers that seperate the compressor from the chassis of the fridge. when they start to deteriorate, and the compressor kicks on, it will bounce against something in the chassis, causing a knocking noise.
