i dont believe it can chagre via usb as usb only provides up to 5v of power you can buy from walmart a cheap ac to car adapter (makes your ac outlet a cig lighter adapter) and power it that way.
I have the same problem, when the battery goes dead, it seems to do so instantly vs. just holding the charge for less time. You can replace the battery, but with the prices coming down and the fact that the map upgrades cost what they do, I'm thinking it's more cost effective to just buy a new GPS.
you could do this by running 2 wires directly from the battery to the back of the cig lighter and by fusing the positive.if it is only when using the cig lighter and not when charging a phone ect.it could be element on the cig lighter shorting
Try checking the fuse inside the charger. Ths may be blown. Have you tried another charger in its place ex. cell phone or radar detector? If works for the cig lighter should charge.
I've wired my tom tom for use on a motor bike. you CANT run 12v straight into the tomtom, you can see on the cig lighter plug it has a 5v output. So I bought cheap lighter socket, it looks like plastic tube with the cable running out of the back. So the wires run from the battery (via an in line fuse) to the cig adaptors, these are hidden in my side luggage bag to keep dry and up to the tomtom. job done
