short answer.....no. If you hook more than one speaker up to a single channel, it will lower the impedence and will damage the amp. You can hook up multiple speakers by using a speaker switch box between the speakers and the amp. This will match the impedence and should keep the amp from blowing.

a correctly set time delay setting between the different channels is essential
for a realistic and unified surround soundfield.
Luckily, most of today's surround processors make setting the time delays
between the rear and the fronts a matter of a few entries in the setup menu.
Yet having a proper understanding of the principles behind correct time delay

Time Delay Setting in Multi-channel Surround Sound Systems

Correct home theater speaker placement and properly balanced sound levels
between the different channels in multi-channel audio, while crucial, are not
enough to sustain a unified soundfield in a surround sound setup. A correctly
set surround sound system requires that sound from all the different speakers
reach the listener at exactly the same instant.
This explains why all fronts, left, right and center channel speakers, should
be set at exactly the same distance from the listening position. At the same
time, in a typical home theater setup, the surround speakers are closer to the
viewer than the fronts.

To compensate for this distance discrepancy, surround sound playback systems
apply a split-second delay to the surround sound channels.

You have a ground loop, most probably. Try grounding your receiver by running a copper wire to the screw on the electrical outlet.

I went to the HDTV plasma manual. It stated the only way the digital optical audio output would work (from this TV) was to go to the menu, select audio and turn off the TV speakers. Basically, it had nothing to do with the technics receiver.

There is likely separate gain controls for your surround channels on this receiver and they are probably set at -10dB. Enter the setup menu labled "level" and increase the amount for each channel equally.

First enable the surround sound mode for the selected input and verify that the media playing is recorded in some mode of surround sound.
You can however, acheive surround sound from 2 channel sources with dolby prologic or prologicII sound processing, or other proprietary modes that your receiver might have from the manufacturer.

Use whatever TV sound output conforms to your receiver's input. If an optical or coaxial digital sound output is available, that is the way to get 5.1 surround sound through the SA-DX1050. But you have to assign the correct input (COAX, OPT1 or OPT2) to the selector (TV, DVD, CD). See pp 12-13 of the operationg instructions for D-Input instructions.
