SOURCE: aperture setting and shutter speed together?

Yes it does. Check your manual. If you don't have a manual you can get a pdf download from canon. This link should get you there. http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=SupportDetailTabAct&fcategoryid=214&modelid=9429#DownloadDetailAct

Shutter speed

Like most point&shoot cameras, the A3100 does not give you direct control over the shutter speed. You're expected to just point the camera and shoot, without worrying about such niggling details.

You can gain some control over the shutter speed by changing the scene mode. For example, portrait mode attempts to reduce the depth of field by opening the aperture, which results in a faster shutter speed. Conversely, landscape mode attempts to increase the depth of field by closing the aperture, which results in a slower shutter speed.

The shutter stays open too long on the Manual setting

At all shutter speeds? Does it appear consistent? Does the shutter stay open more or less the same amount of time even if you change the shutter speed?

How to chance shutter speed in canon sx 260

For direct control over the shutter speed, set your camera to the Tv (time value) mode. See the "Specific Shutter Speeds (Tv Mode)" section in the user guide (page 140 in my copy).

If you need the user guide, you may download a copy from here.

Turn the dial to "Tv" (set Time Value) and use the "left" and "right" buttons to choose the shutter speed displayed on the screen. The camera will adjust the aperture and ISO (sensitivity) to correct the exposure.

Canon EOS Rebel GII With 35-80 Lens 35mm Film Camera shutter

In manual mode you should be able to change the shutter speed simply by turning the main dial (the thumbwheel located near the shutter release button).

How do I change the shuuter speed on my A550 power shot canon camera

Since there is no shutter or aperture priority mode on the A550, the shutter speed is predetermined by the shooting mode. You can try changing the ISO speed when in a certain mode, but the camera may compensate by changing the aperture setting rather than the shutter speed. You'll have to experiment.

You can place the camera in Long Shutter Mode, however, when you want exposures times between 1 and 15 seconds. You set that by pressing the Function menu and Func. Set button when in [Camera icon]M mode, then using the < and > buttons to cycle through the long shutter settings.

Hope this helps!

I have a canon sx3osi it takes pics slow ,can i change the shutter speed?

You can select the shutter speed by choosing "Tv" mode (shutter priority) and choosing a quick shutter speed like 1/100 or 1/125-- but that is probably not your problem. You're probably looking for "continuous" shooting mode, shown as several overlapping rectangles-- as opposed to single shot mode, which is commonly shown as a single rectangle, possibly with an S inside. I'm not sure about the SX3osi, but an older or less expensive camera may just have to take several seconds to record a photo.

You should download a manual.

Specs say it is an autofocus and autoexposure camera with limited manual input required.

I've tried some night shots, and I would either adj the exposer compensation level, or you can lower the ap value witch would increase the diaphragm opening. try this out and tell what you get. I believe you can adjust your iso settings, too much you might get some digital noise.
