Bad/cheap drill Same problem, drill just quit working and had a burned smell with smoke. I took the drill apart and found the interior wiring to be melted, and the motor burned up. Cheap, cheap, cheap drill - nothing like my Dewalt or Makita drills! They cost more, but last forever, and you can get replacement parts to repair ANY problem. Worth their weight in gold!

Well burning and smoke is either a switch or motor. Disconnect the motor and run it with battery voltage and no switch. If it's still slow and smokes it's the motor if not it's the switch. The other one sounds more like the switch but could be the motor. Testing would be the same as the other. On the 18 volt open it up and see if the reversing lever got hung up. It may be that you can line it back up and be ok. More likely it's a bad switch and needs to be replaced. All these tools have static sensitive switches and need to be worked on at a static free work station. Hope that helped..
Hi, The only way to tell if you can fix it is to take the drill apart... Look for two wires melted together...my guess is that they got too hot and melted together inside the drill... separate and insulate and you should be fine...
Smoke from under the hood ?
Smells like burnt rubber ?
Either the compressor or the comtressor clutch is bad so it locks up wen you urn it on and the fan belt is burning..
Unfortunately your motor is toast- it also provides the low voltage for the remote control. Motors are no longer available new so your best bet is to try to find an old projector on the sued market. you can often get them as cheap as free to $25.00. If it's working, just use it. If there are other things wrong but it's motor works, you should really have the identical motor- not all were the same electrically.
Get the filter housing out of the machine and wash it out. Blow out the blowers housing. Change the control thermostat. It mounts right next to the fuse on the back:
The problem could be the brushes and if so it is be quit easy to replace them by pulling the drill apart and slipping the old ones out of there sleeves on the armature and slipping the new ones back in there place . you can buy these brushes at any good tool shop . all you will need is the model number of the drill which you can locate on the side case of your drill . hope this helps.
