I've just purchased a washburn g-banjo serial number 0120038 B-9. On the skin is printed 'REMO' weatherking banjo head only. Made in USA. Have you any history of this instrument?

Typically to the lugs, they rare the threaded hooked end metal pieces used to tighten the drum head.

The laws of physics govern this. The strings "ring" while they resonate. The time they resonate is related to the "Q" of the string or the efficiency. The Q is the enrgy stored divided by the energy lost per CYCLE of the oscilation. Strings that damp out quickly have a low "Q". This can be caused by any of several things thaat include anything that can dampen the oscillation. String quality is important as well as secure attachemnt at each end and proper placement in the nut at the head. See if you can find anything that creats drag INCLUDING string height that affects the windage as they vibrate. First place to look is at the resonator end. Are the strings well attached at the end? Is the bridge properly placed and setting tight on the head? The bridge often has offsetss for some strings... check that it is properly oriented. I will refer you to videos on banjo stringing on YouTube, They can cover much more than we can here using text.
