I had accidentally overcharged a unit with freon one time (r410a freon), and when the unit stopped, the compressors rotor would spin backwards and make a loud "knocking" noise. This was on a scroll compressor, not a reciprocating compressor. Also, most compressors have a check valve, allowing freon to circulate in 1 direction only. And if it fails, when the compressor stops, the freon will rush opposite its normal direction of flow, and will sound off as a knocking noise(again, I've seen that on a scroll comp). That may make your indoor coil shake. I've seen/heard that make the copper lines shake but never the coil. Hope this helps! And FYI... Most ac service techs can check "superheat and subcool" as well as freon pressures. Without checking these 2 temperature measurements, we are just guessing as to how much freon is in the system. Make sure to ask politely beforehand for your service tech to do so PROPERLY when he checks the freon levels per factory specs, which should be on the units technical data located on the outdoor unit.
ME TOO !!!!! THE COMPRESSOR RUBBER MOUNTING BUSHINGS ARE LIKELY WORN OR LOOSE. THE HARMONICS OF GAS PRESSURE "HAMMERING" ARE CAUSING IT TO SHAKE.
THIS IS WHAT I DID: UNPLUG THE FRIGE, AND REMOVED THE CARDBOARD PANEL ON BACK. THE COMPRESSOR IS A GALLON SIZED BLACK GLOBE SHAPED UNIT. IT HAS 4 RUBBER MOUNTING BUSHINGS/FEET. SHIFT OR WIGGLE THE COMPRESSOR AROUND SOME AND THEN TIGHTEN BUSHINGS WITH 7/16" (11 MM) WRENCH UNTIL IT GETS TIGHTER. YOU MIGHT NEED TO REPEAT UNTIL YOU FIND A QUIET/SWEET SPOT . WHILE YOU ARE DOWN THERE, ALSO REMOVE THE FRONT COVER AND CLEAN THE DUST OFF OF THE COILS WITH A VACUUM. WATCH OUT FOR SHARP METAL EDGES AND HOT COILS WHILE WORKING. .... DOUG
Pull the fridge away from the wall and inspect the compressor. Your description sounds like the compressor is hitting something. It is rubber mounted and usually can be pushed away from whatever it is hitting.You do not want to jamb something to stop the noise, as the compressor needs to move freely. Many compressors shake during start up and shutdown, and this is considered normal. Abnormal if the compressor hits something during this movement.
have you tried checking the start relay that is on the side of the compressor its the small piece usually under a small black box located on the side of the compressor. the buzzing noise your hearing is possibly your compressor trying to start up. this is generally a buzzing for 5-7 seconds followed usually by a click noise if it goes on for several hours you will notice the temps in the unit starting to rise. for alot of may tags with the tecumseh compressor the compressor had to be replaced. if it has an embraco compressor you can just replace the start relay on the compressor. let me know what you find thanks Peyton
the motor could be on the way out. Put your hand (carefully) on the motor (back of the refridgerator), if it is too hot to touch then the motor is burning out and will need to be replaced.
based from your story. the noise could be coming from the compressor as it starts. compressor usually vibrates a lot when starting. it would last from a few seconds to a few minutes then would normalize as it sucked all the evaporator pressure down to its normal readings. you can check the rubber mountings of the compressor,you may need to replace them. also check for some tubings that may be rubbing or touching as the compressor vibrates. tighten alllso those mounting bolst of the compressor. that should solve your problem. if everything is done and still the same, the noise could be coming inside the compressor which there will be no solution but to replace the compressor. the cleaning that you did helped it a little bit because the vibration decreased a little coz it was able to breathe a little.
