some will do this as its a safety device, more modern machines have a over ride, be it on the ignition swith or a button or even a pedal
check the forward/reverse switch. Possibly a loose wire. Unhook the battery and go to each wire and verify it is connected properly. Then reconnect the battery.
There is a snap ring that broke in the rear of the transmission. Remove the drive shaft, remove the tail piece, push the drum forward and replace the snap ring. If you have 4X4 remove the transfer case
