If I hit the button while it's drifting down, it starts a mechanically driven descent. Then if I push the button again, it goes back up. Sometimes it works just fine, but yesterday it took about 8 tries to get it to stay open

I had hand ropes to pull door manually at the sides of the door that crossed the path of the safety sensors and caused this. I also had stiction in the door where the sections paint would stick preventing the sections to hinge. Try releasing the thing and moving door manually to insure smooth operation. Also the force sensor may be tripping. To sense this "help" raise the door. Also see if the frame and the pointing of the sensors might distort as door is raised.

Ate these the programble remotes or the original?
Testimonial: "They do have the little switches. I purchased the house about 16 months ago and they came with it so I don't know how old they are. I find it odd that all of the sudden both will not close the garage. If I use the switch on the wall it is fine."
