Install a brand new needle.
Unthread your machine, ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread from the beginning.
Top thread breakage could occur when the thread frays--could be a result of the tension too tight, a damaged or incorrect needle, the needle eye too small for the thread, a burr somewhere that is snagging the thread, or old or bargain bin thread.
Snapping top thread could be the result of mis-threading, the tension too tight.

Sounds like your tensions, both upper and lower are out of whack. Easily fixed if so...google a vidyfor your make/model machine on adjusting both upper and lower tensions.
