Power light goes on and off as usual but only a blank, black screen comes up. A few times the picture has come up as well but the problem seems to be getting worse every day (turns on fewer times each day). The menu does not show either.

survival,
Here's a couple of things to try:
Power down and remove the battery. Leave it out until you are done with the following procedures. Remove the memory modules and put only one back in. Try to power up. If that works, replace the other one and power up. If that works, you're fixed!
If not, try to power up in safe mode and see what happens. If it comes up, try running diagnostics on the HDD. If that fails, try reseating the hard drive.
Let me know how you're coming along on this. May be able to come up with more ideas, if needed.

Throw it out the window. Acer sucks.
SOURCE: RE:monitor goes black
Monitor going black after a few seconds can be causd by a faulty power supply or inverter. Some monitors have both as one unit.
Sometimes it is basic failed capacitors, After that then I would look at transistors.
The average monitor from 17 to 20 and sometimes the 22s have usually 4
bulbs in them. One bad bulb will also cause the inverter to not fire up.
Bad bulbs usually show pinkish tint, or flickering or are dark at center top or bottom of the display.

You most definately have bad capacitors in the power supply. try and get it repaired as soon as possible, not an expensive repair that iv'e seen.
