Maytag Performa PAV2300AWW Washer makes grinding noise when agitating. Agitator seems to move fine, no sound on spin cycle - spins freely and works fine. Everything else seems to work great! Any ideas?
Its probably you stator plate and rotor. But you need special tools for this repair. There a spring that is under 200 pounds of pressure and if you take the screws off that hold the plate its going to fly into you face if your dont use the special tools to depress the spring. Is it more of a clanking kinda of noise? DOes it olnly happen with heavy loads? Try this out. Fill the washer with water only. and get it into a wash cycle with water only. If there is no noise then put in like a load of towels. A heavy load. Now if you hear the noise now then its for sure you stator plate and rotor..hope this helps, but like i said you need those special tools to do this repair or injury can result from the spring part.
tilt your washer against the wall, take the belt off and manually spin the 2 small pullys you see under. do the back corner one first. If you spin it as fast as you can both directions and you hear a noise in either direction, than there a problm with your pump(which is the back corner pully) if you dont hear anything, than soin the front corner pully( i believe it your motor pully) spinn this fast both direction, if you hear a noise in either directions, than its your motor pully problem) if you dont hear a noise when you spun that pully, then put the belt back on and fill the wassher to get it to wash. Does this noise happen in evry load setting? Like does it happen right away once washer goes into agitation mode? if you tried the maual spin checks i suggested, and you didnt hear any noise, then it might be your transmition. Gears might be bacd interanlly....try this test if you can....hopefully this helps, let me kno whats happens with this second test i suggested....

we are going to try your suggestion of filling it with water only and then towels. I'll be back with what happens. It sounds like a coin is bouncing incredibly fast on metal. does that make sense?
Maytag dryer sounds like a spin cycle at the end of the cycle
