The problem is probably the foot control. The little wires wrapped around the insulator have broken and are shorting against each other or the cord itself has a short. You can purchase an aftermarket foot control at your local shop, this is the cheapest way to try first, if that does not correct the problem replace the cord.

Checking with an authorized Husqvarna Viking dealer. They should be able to order a replacement manual from Viking for you. Check Husqvarna Viking website for dealer closest too you.

Take it in to be serviced by authorized Viking repairperson. I understand that for ~ $175 they will disassemble your machine, remove all the hardened grease from gears, calibrate the gears & set tension correctly, etc. A small cost considering these older mechanical sewing machines are GEMS and will provide you another 60 years of sewing bliss if taken care of properly.
