SOURCE: problem with start up on telescope

Most probably, flat batteries. Autostars go berserk when batteries are even a little low. Try it with a mains power adaptor instead.

Otherwise, maybe its a dodgy curly cable, broken Autostar, broken control panel or Autostar firmware needs reloaded

SOURCE: Meade lx-90 dec printed circuit board bad. where

Since you already disassembled the scope-- you can send the board to Ron Sampson and he should be able to repair it. He fixes main boards and hand controllers (including the screen and keyboard on the hand controller!)

If you post a message on the Yahoo LX90 group looking for Ron Sampson he will answer you. You can then email or phone him for instruction on how to send him the board.

ARE YOU SURE it's the board? It could be a bad keyboard or a bad cable on the hand controller. You should get another hand controller and cable and test it before you send it off. Can you borrow a hand controller and cable from anyone.... or from a local scope retailer?

SOURCE: Meade ETX 80 telescope missing parts

You are missing a screw on cap for the rear port, and you need to buy several 1.25 inch eyepieces.

Scopestuff.com sells the rear port cap also you may be able to get one directly from Meade- http://www.meade.com/support/index.html

Several internet retailers sell 1.25 inch eyepieces.

Here is one:

Testimonial: "Thanks Joe! As it turned out I was also missing the 90 degree eyepiece holder."

I have a Meade ETX-70. When turned on, the handset says there is a Motor Unit Fault: Motor failure detected due to moving handset between scopes, low battery level, obstructed or overloaded scope. I've...

This is usually caused by low battery power-- as the hand controller reported. DO NOT USE rechargeable batteries they do not have enough volts. Use alkaline batteries only.

This can also be caused by a broken gear or a failed internal motor. You can return these to Meade for repair.

Meade DS 2000 Goto Reflector scope. I am looking for the base goto motor assembly housing witch houses the motor and gears. Can anybody please help?

You cannot actually get parts for this scope other than from Meade directly-- and possibly a USED motor on Ebay. Usually Meade wants you to send in the scope for repair and will not sell you any gears or motors.

Hi I have a meade ETX 105 pe I can get the scope to move Alt motion with the controller but it wont move in the Azimuth position with the controller. Might I be doing something wrong

This can be caused by 4 things-

A stuck button on the hand controller.

A bad hand controller cable

A burned out circuit board inside

A burned out Azimuth motor

(Long shot) bad firmware in the hand controller. DO a Reset and reload the firmware.

Try to borrow another hand controller and buy a new cable. If these two do not fix it then it's a mechanical problem or a circuit board problem inside the scope.

Meade can repair this but you will need to send them the scope:

Calibrate motors and then TRAIN the drives-- this sets the gear backlash.

You should Calibrate motors every time you take it outside and Train drives at least once every year. The symptom you describe is called "rubberbanding".

Train the drives.

Motor tries but cannot move on the horizontal. Moves fine on the vertical. Usage only in Alt/Az mode. Only have the electronic controller that came with the scope.

You did tighten the AZ clutch? You did start from the HOME position? (turn the scope Counterclockwise to the hard stop)

Then you will either have to send it back to Meade for repairs, or open the bottom of the base, and look inside and see if the AZ worm gear is actually meshing with the motor. It could have come loose.

I took apart the vertical support arm and need to insure that I am putting it back together properly as it will not currently move vertically, horizontal is ok

Here is the manual-
http://www.meade.com/manuals/TelescopeManuals/Reflectors/DS2000%20manual.pdf

If the motor does not work it can indicate-

A broken wire inside

A broken altitude motor

A broken motor control circuit board

Only the first one listed above can be fixed by you. The scope must be returned to Meade for either motor or electronic repairs.

I have a meade lx90 8inch 3 years old with autostar 497--when i try to raise the scope up it keeps drifting down also having problems with intermitant slewing on set up-both motors working ok

This is called "rubber-banding". Your scope needs to be re-trained.

So, setup a target during the day at least 100 feet away from the scope (200 feet would be better, Calibrate motors using the same power source you use at night, and Train Drives. Later after dark, do a Calibrate sensors on Polaris.

You should train drives about once per year, and calibrate sensors about twice per year.

You may want to update the firmware before you Train Drives. The latest version is 43Eg available on the Meade.com web site. You with need the Autostar Updater Software also available on the Meade web site under Customer Service---- Downloads. Version 5.9

Need instruction manual for 1996 or 1997 etx 90 basic model

The manuals are all available to download from www.meade.com.

If your scope has the motor drives and a control panel into which a controller could be plugged, then you just need to buy an Autostar 497 - always available on eBay for about £85. However, there are older models of the ETX which only have one motor or as a spotting scope for terrrestrial use with no motors - Autostar cannot be connected to these.

Look at the pictures of scopes on eBay which come with Autostar - if your looks like these, Autostar will fit. Else you are out of luck!
