Exact problem I also have a sony bravia 1080p that is only 10 months old. It now has thin flickering vertical lines all over it. Almost forming larger bars. They seem to interact with the screen images. Such as shadows on peoples faces will have lines but the cheek area wont. I've tried new HDMI cables and reconnecting everything. Nothing works so far. Luckly I did purchase the 3 year warranty. I will call them if no one can help. It seems like there must be a simple solution since it is still new. Maybe it is a lemon though.
Well I called in the warranty. It took 29 days to fix. First they thought it was the panel, not the problem. Turns out it was the main circuit board. It now works like new again!! Finally! Thanks for the help and support. :DWell I called in the warranty. It took 29 days to fix. First they thought it was the panel, not the problem. Turns out it was the main circuit board. This is an internal malfunction, deffinately use the warranty on it. If you decide to fix it yourself post again and I'll walk you through changing the LCD controller. Its not too challenging, but will require you to dismantle almost the entire tv.

I have the same issue. Bought the TV 1/08 and it started showing those exact symptoms about 3-4 months ago. It generally progresses and gets worse. You can try to fix it as it's some kind of TAB connector issue, or keep calling Sony so that the 52" owners of the XBR4 and 5 series get the extended warranty just like the 46" owners received for the same series. If enough of us keep calling, they'll have to act.
If the line is present in all inputs and modes, there is a problem with the LCD Panel. The only way to fix it is to replace the whole LCD Panel which is very expensive (usually around $1000+ for 40" Sony). Unless the TV in under warranty, it is usually around the same price for a new TV.
I have a 46 inch , Sony XBR 4 tv . The past week there has colored vertical lines that appear on the screen for about 10 minutes . Then they go away . What is the problem and solution?
You are going to find it is a LCD panel problem. I am sure that they will take care of you. But also realize that this could have happen to any brand of LCD panel and you will probably not have any other panel issues once it is fixed.
I feel your pain,

I assume that when you get the line you lose the picture, if so, you have vertical collapse, either a dry joint in the vertical section or capacitors or vertical I.C., I would doubt that the scan coil would be O/C as that is rare. if you can't do it yourself I suggest taking it to a repairer, as it should be an easy fix...Hope that helps...Phil
If it still under warranty, no cost will be there, but if its out of warranty, you have to pay to Sony (might be they give you some discount) because its problem in LCD Panel.
This maybe the symptom of a bad Panel. One Vertically This line is 99% bad panel. Call your warranty provider or SONY tech support if purchased under 2 years.
Model KDL-40s4100 and it has never been damaged or hit at all.
