While there might be climatic, geographical or soil chemistry reasons why your gardenia doesn't flower, and for those things you should refer to some good gardening books, I do listen to Gardeners Question Time from the BBC (available online from the BBC iplayer) and the advice remains constant for flowering shrubs, trees and plants that refuse to flower.
The experts maintain failure to flower is caused by looking after a plant too well so the plant converts all that love into growth and the generation of foliage. Plants flower when they fear they are going to die and turn energy into reproduction; flowers.
The secret to flowers is to know when and how to treat your plant badly...
Yellowing leaves and browned tips, although I am not an expert, seem often to indicate over watering but it is reckoned impossible to over water a spider plant due to the origins of the plant which is a sort of a tropical grass used to warm humid conditions of indirect light..
Perhaps it is being under-watered or positioned in direct light. Water it well each time but allow the soil to dry out between waterings and feed occasionally in the growing season. Misting the leaves might help...
Hi Carole. Clivia yellowing leaves
Over-Watering. Clivias develop yellow leaves and root rot if they are over-watered. They grow best when kept barely moist in pots with excellent drainage.Clivias bloom more freely when their roots are crowded, so don't re-pot until the bulb starts to push out of the container.31 Jan 2011
It could be that the container they are in is too big. The top layers of soil are the first to dry up so if a container is too large for the plants, the nutrients and water could be washed down beyond the smaller plants reach. I would start by having the soil tested at a local plant and tree nursery. Over time minerals and salts can build up in soil to levels that may be tolerable for a larger plant that has grown in that soil it\'s entire life, but will mean doom and death to smaller plants or different types of plants. If the soil tests ok,. then I\'d try a smaller container. I\'m no expert, this is just from my own experience. Hope it helps.
