The AUX sockets on the TV are for sending a signal in to the TV. This is what's known as an input.

Signals don't come out of any socket that is labeled in or input. If you want signals to come out of a device, then the correct socket to look for is labeled out or output

The cheapest way of connecting your flats screen and soundbar is to use the TV's headphone jack. It's not the best quality, but a lead will cost a couple of Pounds/Dollars and it will do unless you want the sound really loud.

To the best of my understanding an Aux port is usually an input port. So you might be sticking the sound bar terminals into the wrong connector in TV. The audio signal from the TV is meant to go into the Aux In port of the sound bar. Usually this will mean a pair of RCA cables (white and red) from TV out to Aux In. If you have done the right things then maybe check if soundbar is not in mute. Try some other source as well. Like connecting an iPhone or ipod stereo out to the Line In port in soundbar and selecting LineIn mode.
