Start up . Black screen.

When I start my computer I get an error message "application failed to start because shdocvw.dll was not found. Reinstall the application may fix problem". If I hit enter all i get is a black screen. The only way I can access anything is through task manager. I've searched and the shdocvw.dll is still in the windows file. How can I fix this?

I have Vista. I tried all of the above, some quite a few times, and nothing seems to work. The problem started after a windows update about 3 months ago. Then if i restarted the computer a few times or restored to an earlier date it worked just fine. Now none of that helps. If I boot in safe mode I get the same black screen. chkdsk and sfc/scannow doesn't find any problems. I've tried going to command prompt and typed regedit.exe. since the dll is still showing up in windows. I thought maybe it just need to be added to the registry. Didn't fix anything. If you have anymore ideas let me know.

What OS? Have you tried F8 at boot to enter safe mode? Can you actually boot windows ok?
Here is a link to HP support options.
I would begin by running chkdsk c: /r from the recovery console (or from windows if you can get it to run.) (instructions here & here)
Then use MBAM to scan for malware.(guide here.) and remove anything it finds.
If no joy, run sfc /scannow and see if that helps. (instructions here)
If that doesn't help, try uninstalling and reinstalling your Internet Explorer. See here for info about the shdocvw.dll file.

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take just a moment to rate this post....thanks!

With Vista, you can run startup repair. See instructions here and another post with similar problem here.

Go to windows update and scan your system. Apply updates offered.

Here's another link that may help...I thought I posted this to you earlier, but I don't see it now...

I know I wrote you a long post last week about this, but it must have gotten lost somehow...this site has a tendency to do that on occasion...

Anyway, that file has to do with your browser function, and somehow I came to the conclusion that if all else failed, you could try ininstalling reinstalling Internet Explorer, and it might be repaired..

This application has failed to start because MFC71u.DLL was not found.

  1. Restart your computer. Sometimes mfc71.dll errors are one-time issues and a simple reboot will fix the problem. It's not a very likely solution, but it's an easy first step that could just save the day.

  2. Reinstall the program or game. If you receive a "mfc71.dll not found" error when you open a specific application, reinstall the application. The installation should restore the mfc71.dll file to its proper location.

Note: Even if you're not asked to, be sure to restart your computer after the uninstall and before the reinstall. Restarting your computer at this point will help to make sure that any loaded files are cleared from memory and that the uninstallation is totally complete.

  3. Download the latest update to the program. Visit the software program's website and download the latest service pack, patch, or other update. It's possible that the mfc71.dll error may have been corrected in an update issued by the program creators.

  4. Install any suggested Windows updates. Certain security and other updates from Microsoft are known to correct issues with or replace the mfc71.dll file.

  5. Scan your computer for viruses and malware. Some mfc71.dll errors are caused by malicious software that found its way into your system.

  6. Using Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003? Most of you won't be, but if you do, visit Microsoft's website and download the latest update to the program.

  7. Install the latest version of Internet Explorer. The Internet Explorer web browser is one easy source of the mfc71.dll file. It's certainly easier to single the file out and download mfc71.dll from a "DLL download site" but installing IE is the much safer option to take.

  8. Reinstall the drivers for your Broadcom wireless network card. This solution only applies when your mfc71.dll error is accompanied by a message about the bcmwltry.exe file. You can update these drivers by visiting Broadcom's website.

Note: Many computer manufacturer's use Broadcom's network hardware in their computers so the best source for drivers in this case would be your computer manufacturer's website. For instance, many Dell, Gateway, and HP computers use Broadcom's network hardware.
