When I start my computer I get an error message "application failed to start because shdocvw.dll was not found. Reinstall the application may fix problem". If I hit enter all i get is a black screen. The only way I can access anything is through task manager. I've searched and the shdocvw.dll is still in the windows file. How can I fix this?
What OS? Have you tried F8 at boot to enter safe mode? Can you actually boot windows ok?
Here is a link to HP support options.
I would begin by running chkdsk c: /r from the recovery console (or from windows if you can get it to run.) (instructions here & here)
Then use MBAM to scan for malware.(guide here.) and remove anything it finds.
If no joy, run sfc /scannow and see if that helps. (instructions here)
If that doesn't help, try uninstalling and reinstalling your Internet Explorer. See here for info about the shdocvw.dll file.
I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take just a moment to rate this post....thanks!
With Vista, you can run startup repair. See instructions here and another post with similar problem here.
Go to windows update and scan your system. Apply updates offered.
Here's another link that may help...I thought I posted this to you earlier, but I don't see it now...
I know I wrote you a long post last week about this, but it must have gotten lost somehow...this site has a tendency to do that on occasion...
Anyway, that file has to do with your browser function, and somehow I came to the conclusion that if all else failed, you could try ininstalling reinstalling Internet Explorer, and it might be repaired..

I have Vista. I tried all of the above, some quite a few times, and nothing seems to work. The problem started after a windows update about 3 months ago. Then if i restarted the computer a few times or restored to an earlier date it worked just fine. Now none of that helps. If I boot in safe mode I get the same black screen. chkdsk and sfc/scannow doesn't find any problems. I've tried going to command prompt and typed regedit.exe. since the dll is still showing up in windows. I thought maybe it just need to be added to the registry. Didn't fix anything. If you have anymore ideas let me know.
