Maytag refrigerator with new filter, water started smelling musty after a couple months, changed filter, also changed internal water bladder. Still smells musty. Ice tastes fine.
The water lines are contaminated with bacteria and/or mold. This is a problem with many refrigerators. You need to turn off water and disconnect the feed line and filter. Mix 4 ounces of Clorox(R) in 1 gallon of water and pump it through with a NEW garden sprayer. You can remove the wand and clamp it onto the water inlet. Activate the dispenser while you pump the bleach through the system. Once bleach starts coming out the dispenser, vent the garden sprayer (de-pressurize), Let the bleach sit for 15-20 minutes. Re-attached water using a brand new filter (do not use the old filter and do not put bleach through filter). Run water until no chlorine odor (it can be a while). This process needs to be done at least once a year.

If unit has a water dispenser, how does water taste? I've run across bell peppers that will emit a bad smell. Keep in mind 95% of all refrigerators circulate air from freezer to refrigerator side and then back. It continues to circulate air so bad produce from refrigerator side will get into freezer side and ice will absorb smell. First, dump all ice. Then line shelves in refrigerator side with newspaper, that absorb smells. You can even try kitty litter in small cups in refrigerator side. Bell peppers gives off that metallic smell and can take some time to get out of unit. Highly unlikely a motor is bad and you've already changed outside water line.
When the Ice Smells 1. Replace water filters every 6 months to avoid musty odors from getting into your ice. If you don't replace the filters, they become clogged with the chemicals they have been removing from the water. In addition to smelly ice, you may see a drop in water pressure if you have a water dispenser, and possibly a decrease in ice cube size.
2. Remove the cap from the new filter.
3. Place the cartridge inside the holder, and twist to the right.
When the ice smells...water & ice have tasted like ***** also.
Same problem in my 1 year old Maytag side-by-side. I let the stuff it sit in a cup for about 5-7 days, and it turned into a fuzzy mess of mold. Obviously a problem. However, Maytag WILL NOT admit a problem. Home Depot would not override Maytag's decisions. They did arrange for an appliance repair company to replace internal tubes, but after about a month of drinking it again, (WITH A NEW $35 FILTER) I found lots of new MOLD last night. Filled a pitcher a couple of times to find six "onion-like" pieces. This has been an ordeal of about 9 months. My family has had unusual illness (colds, flus, stomach problems) for the past 9 months. I am about to take it to the city dump.
We have the same problem. Started 2 weeks after purchase. (6 months ago). Tech. replaced fliter, worked for another 2 weeks, then water & ice awful again. Tried to live w/ it - ordered another filter a week ago. Replaced & within 24 hrs. problem was back. Called Whirlpool. Said tech who came to my househad written in his report that tap water & fridge water tasted the same. A lie - he agreed w/ me that the water from fridge was bad, & replaced filter which had a musty odor. Whirlpool basically called me a liar but agreed to send another tech to check it out. I will never buy another Whirlpool product & plan to tak this problem as far as I need to in order to get satisfaction. This is ridiculous!
I have the same problem with a 3 month old ge front loading washer.after 1 month it started off smelling musty..I thought it was my imagination, now at 3 months old our clothes smell so bad I think we might just have to buy new clothes! everytime I wash a load the clothes smell worse and now you can even smell it just walking into our closet 2 floors up. A new washing washing machine should NOT be doing this! so far leaving the door open in between washes has helped a little but I plan on tipping it back and finding the hidden filter today. Isn't it lovely that they don't mention a filter that needs monthly cleaning or it's location in the manuals?!
