TCL 55US57. Left side of the picture is considerably darker than the right. Could it be a screen problem? Or is this something I can fix with repair parts?

You have a defective panel, the set isn't repairable, please don't waste money trying boards as it won't fix it, this has turned into a common issue with a lot of TCL sets with a generic Chinese made panel. For future reference get a Samsung or LG set.
Gently tap the area where the cables plug in and see if the situation changes. In some cases it is a loose cable connection inside the television. Otherwise you are going to be taking it apart to see if you can find it. If the issue changes when you tap it then you have to take it apart anyway to find the cable that is causing the problem. They are flat wide cables that look like ribbons. It can also be a problem with a control board or the screen itself.
Sounds like moisture or smoke damage or maybe was electronicaly damaged un plugging plugging in while unit was still powered on and or plugged into other devices
