Bobber on 1937 royal quiet typewriter does not go up and down to catch ink on spool. I can manually move it, seems like the piece is not catching on the undercarriage

SOURCE: the ribbon wont advance

The ribbon drive on this model are gear driven..a .may be off, a loose set screw on one of the gears..the ribbon may be the wrong one or it has a ribbon reverse lever on the side of the machine, this should be free of binds.
Hope this helps........

The needle wont stayed treadedwhile sewing. I have changed out the needle and changed out the thread and it keeps unthereading while sewing the bobber is working just wont stay threaded threw the neddle

My trouble shooting suggestions are:

check that the thread is in the thread take up lever eye correctly
Is the top tension set too tight, ie should be on 5
Is the thread catching somewhere in the thread path?
Is it catching on the thread spool itself, sometimes they have a little notch cut in the top edge to hold the thread tail but it could be getting caught in there during sewing. If so, turn thread spool up the other way or use a mushroom cap on top to hold the thread off the spool top edge.

just go through the top threading path checking thread is into all thread eyes correctly and not catching on anything and that it is threaded correctly, it should be one of the above causing this.

The ivory colored plastic turning knob on the right side (doubt it matters) that turns the barrel so you can insert paper (you can still turn it without, there's a small visible circular piece of steel...

I have a circa 1940's-50's Royal Desktop Typewriter. The ribbon that was already on it was rather worn and severely faded so I bought new ribbon for it. The only available ribbon was a red-black silk inked...

You have the ribbon on wrong. The ribbon dosen't feed off the spool but take up onto the spool. install the ribbon so that the moving spool is taking up the ribbon.

Margin settings

You have to hold the magic margin button down while you move the carriage all the way to the left, then release the margin button. Then repeat for thr right margin. Hold the right magic margin button down while moving the carriage all the way to the right, then release the margin button.

Smith Corona Classic 12 ribbon won't stay in place

Okay...i had the same problem when I replaced the original ribbon that came with my Classic 12. I think it was the ribbon that came with the typewriter.
Anyway, on the ribbon carrier, there are two sets of metal prongs on top of one another. If you get the ribbon behind both of them, it will pop up and not go back down or won't come up at all.
You have to get the ribbon between the two sets of prongs. There's isn't much room and you have to kind of pull the bottom of the ribbon taught and slide it down from the top.
It isn't easy the first time, but after you get it, you won't forget.

As for your ribbon not feeding...take the spools out and make sure the pegs that go into the holes in the spools are rotating when you type. This is what moves the spools. Then make sure you're getting the pegs in the hols when you put the spools back in.
Also, make sure the ribbon isn't twisted anywhere and that it's threaded correctly. Both spools should look identical with the ribbon coming out of the top toward the carrier.

To ensure you have the correct ribbon, got to the Office Depot online store and do a search for Smith Corona Classic 12 and you will get a pretty generic, double-black ribbon that fits and works perfectly...and is so soaked in ink you can reuse each side three times. I don't recall the brand name, but the box is grey with red lettering.
