I looked into the power board and it's BN44-00514A Power Supply Boards SAMSUNG. Do you think this is worth investing in or do you think it's something else?
My experience with this unit is that it is highly susceptible to surges. I have replaced the same input board on one set twice. Samsung does not Support this unit very well. Parts are available but very difficult to find someone who will sell them to you. I suggest a repair shop or replace the set.

The picture on your TV is created by an electron gun firing at the phosphor coating on the screen. The position of the guns beam is controlled by magnetic coils, which are driven by scan circuitry.
Normally, the gun scans left to right, top to bottom to create each single frame of the moving image.
From what you are saying, it sounds like there is a fault in the vertical control system somewhere - basically the gun is going left to right but not up and down, resulting in your picture being squashing down to one row high!
It is unlikely to be a fault with the magnetic coils. My guess would be a faulty resistor that is breaking down (and changing its value) as it gets hot.
It should be a relatively easy to fix, but given the age/value of the TV it might be worth considering a replacement.

Follow these steps to figure out what problem is.
When you turn on TV, look at the back and see if the back light on. If it is on, the power supply and inverter work fine. The suspection now is main board and T-con board (the small board on the middle-top of the panel)
To find the problem from the main board or not. Look at the power supply and measure Vs on - turn on the TV, this approx 5 vlt DC needs constant once you turn on the TV. If it is drop or unstable - main board problem - replace it.
If Vs on is good - disconnect the T-con cable from the power sup. If power sup stop clicking - T-con need replacing. Hope it help.
