SOURCE: Battery dead unless pluged into computer. Charges
It is not a dead battery , the problem is you have let the battery run
to low on too many occasions, the real problem is the battery now has a
memory point it only charges to a minimum level.
Without the USB
cable connected take a clothes peg or any spring clip and put it on
your media players play button to make it stay on and the unit will
display the low battery warning, the whole time the play button being
held down, leave on until the battery is truly dead and won't turn on
again.
Reconnect to USB cable it may take several attemps when you
see it start charging, do not disconnect it again, let it charge for
two hours minimum.

My roommate had the same problem, pretty easy to fix. Make sure your memory card and battery are all the way in and they should lock. If you lost the booklet, the positive/geative signs should be on the bottom right when sliding it in.
