2004 GMC Envoy knocking or banging noise in the defrost part of the dash every time I start it Blower wil not switch from defrost to floor or to vents stays on defrost only
Sounds like the diverter door is bound up causing the motor to bog down under load. You'll need a manual for that job. It's a pain in the rear to get to.
Testimonial: "would a bad actuator cause this banging ?"
Yes, but you have to be sure the door freely moves without binding
how do I get to the door ?
The best bet is to get a manual for your vehicle. They have them at most auto parts stores made specifically for your model and year. That saves hauling around a huge manual that contains information you'll never use. You'll see diagrams and a step by step instructions on how to do the job. Look on U tube for some videos, too. That way you'll be able to see what's in store to get at the offending parts.

SOURCE: No air flow from defrost vent on my van.
Could be a vaccum line leaking not changing the vent flap to defrost
SOURCE: Problem with air not coming out of vents.
Check for a vacum leak from the engine to the a/c.The color of the hose is black. Also check if the heater control valve hose is unplugged. If you have vacuum the it sounds like the door for the vent/floor/defrost is broken.
SOURCE: blower vent selector switch not working
this is what is called a factory default. for safety purposes if there is a problem with the wiring in the climate control system it defaule to the defrost position so you can see out the window. this can be a pretty tough job, the whole dash may have to come off. unless you well versed in automotive diagnostics and troubleshooting, and have the right equipment, I would take it to a local automotive technician.
