SOURCE: sony ericsson smartchip

I've had the same problem occur once or twice. Seems when the cellular provider makes a system switch from one tower to another system (carrier) the SIM chip can sometimes become temporarily deactivated.

To solve this issue complete the following steps:

1. Shut your phone down
2. Remove your battery and leave it out of the phone for a few minutes
3. Remove you SIM card and wait for a count of 10sec
4. Reinstall the SIM and battery
5. Power the unit on
6. Perform an Initial System Configuration/Setup
7. When the system prompts you to copy the phone list information, select YES
8. Check your phone status. It should now be back to normal.

If following these simple steps does NOT bring your phone back to normal, there may be a problem with either your cellular account (account suspended) or there has been failure of the local cellular network you are trying to connect to. To verify this you will need to either have a second phone with the same carrier to verify connection and/or SIM functionality. If this is not possible, contact your service provider to report a service outage.

SOURCE: Inactive Smart Chip

Unfortunately if it's a bad smart chip I'm afraid you will have to buy another phone. If you've had it several years you really got your moneys worth. Good luck, sure wish I had better news for you.

You cannot reactivate a smartchip aka sim card...once it's deactivated for security purposes they are not reactivated. You will need to get a new smartchip

Insert smartchip

You are placing the smart chip on top of the smart chip holder. It's a little metal square where the smart chip should go. Lift up the metal square and place the smart chip underneath. I had to go to my local AT&T dealer to figure this out.

Smart chip locked

If your phone is a Cingular or AT&T branded Sony Ericsson Z525 and your Smart chip is from another cell company, you might have to get your phone unlocked. If it is from another AT&T phone, it should fit right in and power up. I know this might sound dumb, but always be sure the words "smartchip" are facing out with the little corner notch on the chip in the upper left when looking at the back of the phone. Hope this helps. -Mike

Insert Smartchip

You have to insert the smart card all the way in on these phones. You can use a pen cap or something to push it all the way in there until it goes all the way in and click and stays there. Then it will not say " insert smart chip" anymore.

Sony Ericsson Z520a

Take the SmartChip out and gently wipe it and the phone where it inserts. This has worked for me.
