Kitchen Aid Mixer Problem

I have a Kitchen Aid Mixer Model Number K45, which was my grandmother's. I believe it is about 20 years old. It has always worked beautifully until the last 6 months. It still works but I have noticed that the last few times I have used it, the motor begins to smell "hot" and there is a "Yellowing" happening around the metal band near the speed knob that goes around the whole head. I read the information regarding what to do if it was leaking oil, I think it may have done that at some time. I do not use it on a regular basis, mostly around yearly holidays, since all of my kids have gone. This machine is very special to me because it was my grandmother's and it is not that I could not afford a new one, but that this one is so special. I would appreciate it is you know of a small appliance "fix-it" shop in the Las Vegas, Nevada area, or you have some suggestions. you can reach me at [email protected]. Thanks for any help you can give me! Denice R. Caouette

Denice,
im sorry to hear what is happening with your mixer. I do not know any places around that area. but i would recommend service. It sounds to me as if it could possibly be the motor assembly not lubricated properly or it could be a power switch going out. either way will be serious to the operation of your mixer. i am not to familiar with that model but im sure the parts can be redily available

Burning smell when running

Your best option is to replace a 25 year old appliance. the cost to repair will far exceed the monetary value of mixer.

How do you tilt the head back on this k45 model?

You will find a sliding lever on the side opposite the speed control. Pushing it toward the rear will unlock the head and allow it to be lifted.

If this does not work, you will need the Service Manual which shows the locking mechanism's action:

Kitchenaid K45 Mixer will only run at one speed, fast

is it a K45 or a K45SS? If it is a K45 you will have to replace the filters inside and probably the speed control plate, if it is a K45SS then you need a new phase control board. The K45 is pre 1978 and the K45SS is post 1978. Your information is correct on pre 1978 K45 models that the capacitor is bad, but it might be cheaper to go garage sale hunting and find a second machine as the parts are no longer made and having spares on hand may be a significant advantage in the future, also there are a great many of the K45SS parts that will also repair the K45 mixer so it may not be a practical solution. Watch ebay regularly for K45 parts, they come up every couple of months. On the parts diagram also look for the K5 diagram as it is identical to the K45, one is a 5 quart mixer and the other one is 4.5 quart, same parts same motor same everything.

Which is the better mixer of these old models: K5A K5-A or K45 SS and what is the difference? KITCHENAID HOBART K5A K5-A 300 WATT MIXER and the KitchenAid Hobart Vintage K45 250 WATT. Thank you

Hello ajlina,

All of these are great home use units, all the attachments are interchangeable between these. The difference between these mixers is the K5 is a 5 quart mixer and the K45 is a 4.5 quart mixer. As I own both of them they are great in the kitchen and have the same durability.

Have any more questions please post to this thread and I will be happy to assist. Thank you for using FixYa.

What kind of grease can be used on a stand mixer after replacing a stripped worm gear? model:K45SS

Food grade grease is what Kitchen Aid put into the gearbox originally. They do supply it as a spare part if you cannot find it as a non Kitchen Aid part.

Kitchen Aid K45 base flange needed

Hi NBSALE, I believe you are speaking of the Screw Cap Kit. Do you have your original Part Lists manual on-hand? If not you can download a PDF version from the KA website at: If you're lacking one, you can download a PDF version from the KA website: http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home.
Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> Enter the 6 character model number, in your case use K45SSW, and select the file listed under Parts List (1), K45SSWH0.pdf (341.41 KB). Check to ensure it matches your mixer model.
Turn to page 3, titled: Base And Pedestal Unit, which provides an exploded view for the disassembly and reassembly of your mixer’s base and pedestal, along with all the parts. Find Illus. No. 2, Screw Cap Kit, Part # 4162529, which is the part that you want to replace.
As far as parts go, here are four potential vendors in no particular order: RepairClinic.com; mendingshed.com; searspartsdirect.com; partstore.com. Prices for the same part can vary widely between vendors, so do your comparison shopping.
Although you don’t need to get inside the mixer to make this repair, here are some links to several excellent websites that detail the disassembling/reassembly of a KA Mixer that you might want to keep in your ‘toolbox’, should you have to delve inside your mixer in the future.
Between these three websites and their excellent pictures and descriptions and your Parts List manual, you should now be able replace any part to your KA mixer.
Good luck and have fun. I hope this helps. Howard, Burke, VA

K45 started smoking while mixing cookie dough

There is the possibility that if the mixer is 30 years old and it has never been serviced that the gasket around the gear case is leaking oil and in that case it would not be hard to get liquids on the armature or the stator as the gear grease in the transmission is vegetable base grease and it separates into liquids and solid and when the head is tilted up the failed gasket allows the separated oil to leak down and to the rear onto the mixer right onto the motor parts. It maybe nothing more that cleaning out all the old grease and re-packing and adding a new gasket.
