I have a 42 inch vizio tv I bought in 2009 when you turn the tv on it works for a few minutes then screen goes black you still have sound if you turn it of then back on picture comes back for few minutes then goes black and I do not see any black lights on tv noir did I see any black light option in any menu to turn off you can turn it down but not off

also check the power cord wire coming from the back of the tv is loose from the tv side or perfect.

Your Tv possibly have faulty y sustain board, just replace that board to fix the problem

I had the same problem with my 37L and 42L Vizio TVs but my 26w vizio TV guide works perfectly. on 12/28/2009 I called vizio about the problem and they said that Vizio lost a law suit with a company (tech didn't tell me the company name) that said that Vizio did not own the "TVGUIDE" technology b/c the other company invented it first. So, Vizio was forced to turn this feature off in their new TV's so that's why my guide button with older Vizio 26" TV (bought in 2007) works and my newer 37" and 42" Vizio TV's (Bought in 2008) do not even though the instructions are still in their user manuals which the tech said will be removed in future user manuals.

The cost to repair it might not be a worry, parts for those types of sets are not available, the plasma style sets are replaced by LCD/LED.

If you are using a set top box this might be caused by turnig the box on at the same tie as you turn the tv on or slightly after you turn the tv on.  If you are using compnent or HDMI inputs the set needs to see the signal as it is turned on to know what formt the signal is in.
