You have a key, next to the ctrl key at the bottom left, in a different color (maybe blue).
Press and hold that, as you press the respective key at the top (also blue), regarding ->num lk <-
If this isn’t sufficient, ->comment back<-, and well have another look at it.

to get the symbol keys we have to press the shift key before pressing those symbol keys....

What version of windows are you on?
if you dont know go to
start -> run (or press winkey + R)
type in winver & press enter
post the version here
in most cases you will find the keyboard settings you want under region & language settings in the control pannel

Sounds like you're setup for England rather than USA in Windows settings, at least the keyboard settings.
