It has vertical lines intermittently (more often than not) that slowly move around the screen. The lines have color and they do show up over the menu words. Once every hour or so the picture may even turn clear and crisp for a few seconds, but then the image will "burn" on the screen over the regular show and gradually fade away and vertical lines will reappear Is there a component you could recommend that would fix this problem?

I had the same problem. Except mine never got better after the tv warmed up. I fortunately I still have my manufacturers warranty and Samsung sent a guy out within a few days. He replaced a few parts which really didn't do anything. However what he did that was interesting was on two circuit boards. One on the mid left and the other on the mid right. Apparently there is a nob or something he tweaked on each panel that cleared the grainy image right up. What he told me was that the it is basically pixels that are not turning off in sync. adjusting the two circuit boards syncs the pixels to turn on and off at the same time.

This is a possible fault in the power supply, and can be a problem with some decoupler caps on some of the boards. The vertical bars and unstability are usually attributed to having high frequency noise and or clocking pulses crosstalking on to the power distribution lines that run through the boards. This can be switching power supply noise, or cross-talk from clocking pulses.
Another thing that can cause your described fault is unstable clocking between the devices that are reading and writing to the data busses. There are a number of data busses running through the set for the boards to be able to communicate with each other.
The tech will use the process of board swapping to service the set, and then do the adjustments as necessary to make sure the new boards match up.
Yes... DLP sets are fairly expensive to service!
This is my personal opinion. If the set is out of warranty, I would change for a Plasma or LCD set. If you compare the performance of these to ther DLP, the difference is very big. From what I am seeing from a service point of view, the DLP's are lower in reliability.

This sounds like one of the driver boards at the bottom or top of the screen has an intermittent fault. The set will have to be taken in to a service centre.

There are a few possible causes for this
-Picture tube has become weak after long useage
-A fault with the automatic degauss circuit could be causing the color problems.
-The color drive circuits may be out of adjustment.
I don't have instructions for you on how to fix this, I would recommend you either buy premium assistance or contact
another expert with long tv experience to possibly get details
on how to correct this problem.
I would recommend you contact your dealer for repairs if you have warranty. If you don't have warranty it may be cheaper to ask around.

either the TCON board or the panel is bad. Sony supplies the two parts as a unit so you will have to have them replaced together. Hope it is under warranty because it is expensive
