I put in new plugs, change oil and filter. Took apart carb. It was clean. disassembled and cleaned anyhow just to be sure. Checked gas flows to and through carb. Disconnected oil pressure switch. Does same thing when spraying starting fluid in carb. On other engines if something wrong with carb I can keep them running for a short time by giving quick shots of starting fluid through carb. not this one. when it dies it seems like a lot of back pressure coming out of carb, even a little smoke does not pop like backfire. Pulled plugs and they seem wet with black carbon on them. Checked spark with plugs pulled and as long as I crank there is good spark. could this be a plugged exhaust? muffler is not easy to take off? It feels like good pressure coming out exhaust while cranking. Any other suggestions?

IF you have a battery get a new one ; put in new gas ; super; dsid you ajest any screws on carb. You tight need to run a prime tank right to your carb to prime it; and then hook your tank backup new gas lines to your carb. Now break out with the WD40 to spray all switches for rust.

When you pull the bowl off of your carb is it clean? If not you have some contamination possibly inside. You might want to remove the carb and blow compressed air through all the vents a ports.

hi
if you have a good compression,a strong enough blue spark and carburetion for the fuel air mixture try priming the engine(put small amount of gas in the spark plug hole)then start the engine.If the engine runs only the gas you put inside the cilinder there is a carburetion problem to find and fix.
let me know regards savumihai71

I had the same problem; The first 2 years the engine ran fine and then the third year it started backfiring, so I put a new carburetor on my engine and the same thing happened. The real problem was the valves needed adjusted. Yes I know, this is very rare, but it did happen. I decided not to try this adjustment myself and opted for a mower shop to do it. It cost about $50.00 and the engine has been fine ever since.
sounds like you may have a broken valve spring. Do a compression test as you crank it. If the valve spring is broken, you will get nearly zero compression, it will turn over very easily and this would explain a couple of backfires.
