Meade ls8 can no longer find north, misses by about 10 to 20 degrees. How can I fix this? Sending it to factory is out of the question.

Meade etx-ls fails to level itself correctly. It successfully identifies it's location (GPS) and finds north, but points down at about 30 degrees when it supposed to be level.

I have a Meade 12" LX200R. The auto alignment procedure fails to find true north. It appears to be about 90 degrees west of north. At the same time, my Autostar II control goes haywire at times. I've...

Do a reset ON THE HAND CONTROLLER AND RELOAD THE LATEST firmware. Make sure you are using a separate 12 volt power pack and NOT the internal batteries.

After the reset do a Calibrate motors-- you must also TRAIN the drives. Read the manual for the procedure. Then take it out and do a two star alignment, using a separate 12 volt power supply.

Meade LX200GPS 16" out of calibration?

Before you panic I would update the firmware/software on the telescope. With an LX200 interface cable you can upgrade the software in your telescope from your PC by going to Meade's web site at www.meade.com

Download Meade's ASU (Autostar Update Utility) and the latest software for your Autostar II absolutely free. You can also use the ASU to add Comets, Asteroids, Satellites, and User Objects to your Autostar II with a few simple clicks of the mouse.

I believe you can get the manual here.

A fellow by the name of Ron Sampson can repair hand controllers and main boards on Meade telescopes. He does very good work. All you need to send him are the board(s).

You can contact him by posting a message on the Yahoo LX90 or LX200 group forums.

Good luck-- by the way he repaired the hand controller for our astronomy clubs 10 inch Meade LX200, at a very reasonable cost.

Calc north not working

Are you running this scope off of the internal batteries? If you are put in fresh batteries. The hand controller will go wacko once the batteries fall below about 60% charge. We always recommend that goto scopes be run from a separate 12 volt power pack. If new batteries to not solve the problem, return the scope to the dealer while it is still under warranty.

Compass is no longer pointing North

I had the same issue. I found that if you re-calibrate the compass the same way you did the first time, then it will act properly. I've had to do this a couple of times and it works.

LX90GPS "finding north" does not complete

The LX90GPS and other LTN devices use an internal accelerometer to calculate tilt and North. That has nothing to do with the GPS. Sounds like you need to talk to Meade.

My LX90GPS doesn't do North very well, but I can calibrate that out with the two star alignment. THEN the thing points almost perfectly all over the sky. Sorry I couldn't help you more.

Also had the problem. I found that the LNT did not find north unless the bottom of the Smartfinder is close to parallel with the ground.
