Hello, Julie -

1. Try removing and resetting the new battery in the smoke detector.

2. If the smoke detector still chirps, I suggest just purchasing a replacement smoke detector unit.

We have a "main" smoke detector (along with others inside bedrooms and in corridors.) When the "main" smoke detector chirps, we have found we have to replace it, with a fresh battery, entirely. To make sure we purchase the right unit, we remove the entire thing from the ceiling mount and take it to the hardware store.

Best wishes.

Hi,

Can you pleas ensure that you have cleaned the unit as well. If it is not broken, that would be the probable cause. You can ask your local fire dept. to assist. They do that for free :-)

SOURCE: our smoke detector keeps chirping spontaneously.

First try vacuuming out any dust that may be in the unit. If that doesn't work, replace the smoke detector.

Most detectors have an expected life of 10 years but I've seen some fail sooner. There are two types: one uses a beam of light that gets interrupted by particulates. The other uses ionization to interact with and detect the smoke. Ionization ones work with a small amount of radioactive material.

The photoelectric ones are good for identifying smoldering, smoky fires. The ionization type of best for fast flaring fires. For really good protection, get a smoke detector with both methods. (It will be more expensive though.)

I hope this helps.

SOURCE: Hardwired Kidde Nighthawk co/smoke detector

If the display shows "Lb", the battery is probably low; replace it. If the display shows "Err", push and hold the Peak Level button. Does the display change to "E09"? If so, then you have just been "had" by the grossly under-documented "planned obsolescence feature" called, rather matter-of-factly, "End of Life". This means that ~7 years after first being powered up, the unit will, BY DESIGN, cease to function, forcing you to buy a replacement. Would have been nice of Kidde to include THAT warning on the OUTSIDE of the package. Call their "Hotline" at 1-800-880-6788 and tell them what you think of that policy. If it is still under warranty (5 or 7 years depending on date of manufacture) they should replace it. In any event, buy another one; if they replace your first one you will have twice the protection. Not a bad thing. *Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer, despite the handle. Words to live by: "Every creative act results from a sudden cessation of stupidity." -Edwin H. Hi Gang, I'm a late-comer to this forum, but I am having this exact same problem. About every 10-15 minutes, and for 33-34 seconds(very consistent) and about 9 times, I get a chirp over my bar in the tv room. We do not have smoke detectors. Its driving us nuts. This started around the time we had a "smart electric meter" installed. I wonder if any of you figured this out?

Ok have a single wired smoke alarm on celing with 9v battery we have changed battery and pushed the test button but it keeps beeping ( live in Sydney)

If you have changed the battery in your chirping smoke detector and it still chirps, you might think your detector is bad. ... With the battery removed, press and hold the test button for 15-20 seconds. Replace the new battery in the detector and plug in the power supply. Restore power to the circuit breaker.

I changed the smoke detectors with brand new ones but it is still chirping. Even if I turn the power off through the circuit breaker and remove the battery it still chirps every 40 seconds.

That can't be are your sure that is the detector that is making the noise .
No power the device can't operate .It chirps to let you know the battery is low even if it is hard wired.
The only thing I can think of that might make it do that is you didn't get the correct breaker and the connection that plugs into the back of the unit is damaged wires or pins are exposed and shorting .Seeing you changed the unit with a new one the chances of both units having the same problem are slim to none.
Check the connector you have to squeeze the sides its a bit tricky to unplug

My Kidde Model 1285 keeps chirping even after I changed the batteries, any ideas why?

Be sure you are using a well known brand battery. The store brands, in my my opinion generally are not quite up to par. Try this and see if the chirp will stop. Thanks for asking me.

Smoke detector removed from ceiling. Only wires visible, but I still hear chirping.

Look at the detector you removed, and all others that may still be wired in.
They all have battery backup. Although the detectors are hardwired, the chirping is coming from one of the detectors to let you know to change the battery.

Kidde # 1276 chirps indicating low battery. Battery replaced and chirping continues. Why?

Don't know for sure, but if your smoke detector is more than 5 years old, than you have to purchase new one (that's their average lifetime). Take a look on amazon: Amazon com smoke alarm. I hope I have helped. Cheers
