SOURCE: sony cd walkman reads but won't play

If you have a small enough screwdriver and some time it's not too hard. I just fixed one of my kids' walkman (same make & model) yesterday. The motor that spins the gears that makes the laser assembly move back & forth came loose. There is a single screw that holds this motor in place. They should use some lok-tite or similar when they assemble these things.

SOURCE: sony cd walkman D-EJ100 troubleshooting

There is a switch on the bottom of the unit that puts it in "HOLD" mode. My guess its for use when it is shipped so there will be less chance of damage. Try switching the two position switch to the other position.

SOURCE: sony walkman won't turn off

That's what all Walkmans do. They only seem to go into standby when they say power off. Batteries drain anyway, but maybe it is being switched back on accidentally, so you need to turn the hold switch on. Even then, it is not properly switched off, it just stops things happening like music starting to play. I find this very annoying too.

My volume control is not working properly. It says AVLS. What does that mean?

AVLS stands for Automatic Volume Limiter System - and it basically limits the maximum volume being output which is why your volume control isnt working properly. You will need to go into settings to turn this option off.

Press and hold the back/home button until the HOME menu appears, press the arrows to select Settings then press the Play button to confirm, press the arrows to select Common Settings then press the Play button to confirm, press the arrows to select AVLS(Volume Limit) then press Play button to change it to OFF.

Just bought a used Walkman D-EJ621 on e-Bay and have found that the volume will not advance upwards past 3. Sound quality is excellent, no hiss or buzz, etc. Am using Bose earphones and fresh batteries....

Hi,
Thanks for update, yes, AVLS limits the volume control to minimum level and it wont advance, turning off AVLS will give you control to change volume level.
Click Sony Support to download required user manual copy of D-EJ621 portable cd player that has all operational details.
Thanks.

Download the firmware update from sony, burn it to a cd in case ithappens again, or you wanna pass it on. HOLD THE PLAY/PAUSE BUTTON ONTHE WALKMAN BUTTON WHEN PLUGGING IT INTO YOUR COMPUTER'SUSB PORT. WITHOUT LETTING GO OF THE PLAY/PAUSE BUTTON, START THEFIRMWARE INSTALLER & HOLD THE PLAY BUTTON ALL THE WAY THROUGH tocompletion. ET VOILA! YOU SHOULD HAVE A WORKING WALKMAN AGAIN! Yay!!!

OK.. here's what else I did. I followed exactly what is stated above and found I needed to try it a few times, for whatever reason, to get it to "take." Then, the player would still not open properly so I did the above routine AGAIN and this time checked the FORMAT option, which I also had to do a couple times to get that to "take" too. Finally, after working at this for awhile, I was able to install some new music to the player. It is now totally back in working order.

PLEASE: Be patient when you do this. And you can do these routines numerous times if need be with no apparent problem as it just keeps redoing the routine like it was the first time. I was so frustrated in talking with a SONY TECH REP in on-line chat before I came here. I was told the player "had experienced an internal malfunction" which would require service and that there was no was to restore the "system files" to the player, obviously not true as that's what the FIRMWARE (and the FORMAT routine too) upgrade does. Phewww.. I'm elated! take care.
