Sounds like something to do with a power saving feature either from HP itself or from Windows. It could also be that for some reason your computer is overheating, which it than shuts itself off to protect the processor. I would try playing with your power saving features, and cleaning out the fans.

HI. that grinding sound is signaling a lens assembly issue. the linkage and gear assembly seems to be jammed. this assembly must be able to move freely i order for the lens to track the CD. if the lens assembly is stripped or jammed, it will not be able to read and it will shutdown into stand by mode to prevent the motor from damaging itself. its most likely gear failure.
Unfortunately, the repair parts for this unit are only available from sony repair depots and, you will need to contact sony manufacturing in order to receive a repair ticket.

One of three things: speaker wire short, shorted/or blown speaker, or a bad output chip. First and easiest way to check is to disconnect all speakers, turn it on, turn it up, and wait. If that's ok, begin connecting one speaker at a time with the unit off, then turn on and play. When you get to the speaker or wire with the problem, it will short and go into protection. Disconnect all speaker wires again and only hook up the speaker that shorted the receiver and test. If it shorts, swap speakers with the same wire and test again. If a different speaker on the same wire causes the unit to short, replace the wire. if it doesn't, you need to test the speaker with a multimeter or disassemble if possible, check the wiring internally on the speaker. Check the impedance, should be 8ohms or 6ohms depending on the drivers. then check for resistance. If your meter says 1... it's shorted and needs to be replaced. Hope this helps
SOURCE: CD keeps ejecting without playing.
try reformatting the cd or try a cleaning cd, the more you pay the better the cleaning cd
