Diagnostic Mode
Entering the Diagnostic Mode
(a) Turn the power supply to the dryer on.
(b) Press and hold the Auto Dry down button, then press the Power
button.
The dryer is now in level 0 of the diagnostic mode. After initial entry into the
diagnostic mode, the Start/Pause button operates the dryer as normal. Press
the Auto Dry up or down buttons to scroll through the fault levels.
There are several levels of diagnostics, most of which are used in
development and production. These levels may bring on various LEDs, but
the level of use for the service technician is that of the last fault.
Last Fault
To enter the last fault diagnostics, enter the diagnostic mode as described
above, then press the Auto Dry up button three times. The last fault will be
displayed on the drying progress LEDs.
The manual is here

SOURCE: Fisher & Paykel ED56 not working
Replace (repair) the exhaust sensor this looks like a transistor with the middle leg cut off. it is situated below the lint filter but can only accessed by removing the back panel, top panel (or rear screws to allow the removal of the drum). drum and then front panel to remove the connector from the mainboard. If you follow the exhaust tube once the back is off you will see a single phillips head screw that is the sensor. check the wires to the circuit board are not broken or dry joints or just replace it. sorry i had a spare machine i scavenged from to fix my problem so i dont know where to buy new.
SOURCE: Dryer Problem
Grinding noise most likely due to the front drum bearings worn out - result is the metal drum making contact with the rim of the from panel.
This requires a total disassembly of the dryer to investigate & likely replacement of the front slipper pads (dry nylon slipper bearings 4 x ).
This will only be a succesful repair if you stopped using the dryer the moment it started screeching.
If you have let it run, the metal-on-metal will have gouged the edge of the drum and will rip up any new replacement bearing pads.
Do not attempt this unless you are a very competent handyperson. Many screws lost, cut fingers and swear words will ensure if you are not confident in approaching this job, so either toss the dryer or get a competent repairman to do the job.
