The motor is labeled an Executive 48 in the spa pump motor world lingo. It is an A.O. Smith P/N-7-177803-02 motor, and I'm pretty sure it's a 1.5 HP even though the label shows --- for the HP line. It has a cord on that I'm pretty certain is 14/4 AWG, I cut the plug end off since it was equipment specific, and the motor is meant for single or 2-speed operation. The label also shows: #2 - Line, #3 - High Speed, #4 - Low Speed. What type of switch should I install on this so that I can run it at both high and low speeds? Also, is #2 the white wire/neutral, #3 for black and #4 for red and yes, it has a green ground. Should this be on a 20-amp circuit or larger? Thanks for your help!

The colors do not matter there is no forced set standard for wiring and colors but we are aware of commonly used color schemes.
Pole 2=Line
Pole 3= High
Pole 4=Low
Ground is Ground

The motor may have a thermal cutoff if the motor draws too much current. Do you have a sufficient large gauge circuit supplying the motore? If not the actual voltage at the motor may drop, causing it to draw more current to make up for the loss of voltage, thereby tripping the motor's protective breaker. I assume the motor will start again after serveral minutes of cooling down.

V1 would be low V2 would be high U1 would be line and then ground. A picture would be helpful to be sure.

high speed phase neutral should go to High speed {phase} neutral low speed {phase} should go to neutral .....Low speed and high speed {phase} need not be connected

The motor should work if you connect the black wire to L1, white wire to L2 and green wire to ground. The red wire should be cut so the conductor does not extend past the insulation and the end wrapped with electrical tape.This should be correct if the motor is a 120 VAC motor. If the motor is a 240 VAC motor then the white wire is not really neutral. It should be wrapped in both the motor wiring area with black electrical tape and the other end in the timer should also be wrapped with black tape.
If this causes a problem because you now have no low speed for the spa then the only way to get the low speed is to squire a 2 speed motor.
