It doesn't matter whether or not the speaker is connected to my receiver or not. I'm pretty handy. Is there a part I can get to fix this problem my self? The unit weighs to much to ship out to be repaired by Cambridge Sound Works. It would probably not be cost effective to try to get it repaired and I hate to just throw it out. Thanks, Vinny
Hi Ok thanks. I cannot be 100 % sure about this without seeing it but it sounds alot like there is a power supply issue, either bridge rec or caps. Caps are very often very obvious. If you get into it and have a look at what is normally the 2 or 4 biggest capacitors at the start/power supply of the board and see if they are ok visibily. If they are bulged, (often they actually explode and leave paper residue) then those are what need to be replaced. Have a look and see.
If its the bridge rec, it could be 4 diodes, fairly large next to each other or a square component with 4 legs out. Need a meter to test, but i would start at caps first
All the best
My sub had the exact problem with buzzing and squaking like this video which may be the same problem as you have: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uxr0X0kxVUY
My solution was:
So i had success fixing this problem with my bass cube which had the
same problems as the video above. The problem was with the big 6800uf
50volt rated capacitors on the circuit board. its a simple fix. i bought
the replacement capacitors off www.mouser.com.
the mouser part number for the new capacitors i bought was:
647-UKW1H682MRD when you replace these capacitors make sure you connect
them in the same direction as the original capacitors. easy fix,
problem solved, sub works great now.
I had a loud buzzing, smoked woofer 36vdc at the speaker,I had a open relay one side 5a 125vac.I replaced the relay and the bass is back. Now it pops when turned on but works fine then when you turn off it pops.I have to get back into it. Hope this helps.
This could be the same problem I'm having. When you plug the cube in, the speaker gets sucked all the way down to the bottom of its stroke, and hums. I'm not sure what 'smoked woofer' means. I replaced the large caps (one was bulged) the 4 zener and the two 220uf capacitors in the power supply as there was visible overheating at that section of the power supply.
Any other thoughts on replacing the relay? Why did you decide to replace that component?
Wolfmanblack-
I have the same hum and speaker getting sucked down to bottom of stroke on Basscube 12. I replaced 2 large capacitors (6800mF) and 2 smaller capacitors (220 mF) and one ZD (15V) since there was evidence of heat on pc board near these components, but my Basscube 12 still buzzes with speaker pulled to bottom of stroke. If you got yours working, what was the fix?

What you've done, which is what I did on BassCube12 #1, solved the problem related to the power supply on BC#1 - it's up and running ! ! !
So there seems to be another common (?) problem which is affecting your cube, cube #2 of mine, and more than likely, the one that started this thread.
Here's some other information, with a caution from another member:

gman63b (above) says that replacing a relay solved his problem, which sounds similar to ours. It is a rectangular blue 'box' on the power supply board and is readily available from Mouser for $2.44 plus shipping.

It is located near where the speaker output leads are, and I'm thinking it controls the in and out movement of the speaker. If the relay 'freezes', the speaker gets stuck in the sucked-in position, which sounds like a reasonable explanation??? When you unplug the 'cube, the speaker drops back into the neutral position. I have limited electronics experience, but a schematic would give me a better idea of how this BassCube works. I have not had time for additional testing, yet ordering the relay and replacing it just might be the solution. What bothers me is that when the cube is plugged in, regardless of the position of the ON/OFF position, the cube is ON with the speaker in the 'sucked in' position.
Again, I wish I had a schematic.........

Since the speaker is getting power even when the on/auto/off switch is off, it makes sense that perhaps the switch or the relay might be inoperative-stuck in one position. I think I'll unsolder the relay and check. Does anyone know the coil voltage for the relay so I can test it? Thanks for the continued commentary.
Wolfmanblack-
I removed the original Good Sky brand MI-SH-224L relay (24VDC coil, 5A/240VAC contacts) from the PC board today and tested it with 24 VDC power supply (2 car batteries wired in series). The relay was bad. The relay clicked when coil was energized but there was no change of state on either set of contacts. I just ordered new relay from Mauser (Mauser Part No 677-OMI-SH-224L, $2.44 ea)). I'll report results when I get it installed. Thanks.
-cwjohnsen- Thank you for sharing your testing results. This information will benefit more than you and I, no doubt. I hope the relay resolves your problem. If I didn't have BassCube #1 already up

I could not find a Service Manual I don't think anyone will.Cambridge says,No serviceable parts inside,(right)The relay has -36 volts dc on one contact and 36 dc on the other. If the relay burns open on one leg/side /contact your woofer will either push out all the time or be pulled in depending on the side of the relay that burnt open or- DC.The Issue most likely due to a very loud surge of volume.
I found the relay on e-Bay.
I didn't find any other parts bad, just the relay.I carefully cut my old relay apart and could see right off that it was melted one side .
Thanks gman63b! I should just order the relay and replace it. I was waiting to see if cwjohnsen got his working? Any results yet CW?
I have a BIC America sub that uses almost exactly the same amp with all of the same problems. I have almost everything on the power board replaced. I lost the zener diode (ZD5) that bridges over the relay's coil terminals. I'm not sure what value it was but the only markings I wrote down for it was 2 24. Any help in figuring out what value it was would be appreciated. Thanks.
This seems to be a common failure with this unit. On mine, one relay contact would not close, and this amp design will put DC on the speaker lead if one power supply side is not connection, causing it to draw lots of current and blow the fuse. I tested the amp by bypassing the relay and it works, but of course it will stay on all the time until the relay is replaced.

Not that it would help.
Is the white noise present in the absence of an input connection, free-floating?

I'm not really sure because the noise is so loud. I just disconnected it. The buzzing sound is extremely loud! Thank you.
Vinny
Sorry I threw the damn thing away out of frustration..... good luck
Have the same problem with my Basscube 851. Did you find out what the problem was? Dan
Hi Vinny, When its connected to a stereo, does it work, even with the buzzing?
