My name is Darcy from Sask. Canada. I am an independant self employed person who does repairs to sewing machines here.  Currently working on a Viking/Husqvarna #1 computerized sewing machjne and am experiencing a wierd issue with it. It seems like it may be a foot control problem from what I can tell. It seems I have to turn machine on for a while (2 to 5 minutes) before the foot control properly controls the speed and or startup, and sometimes that is a hit and miss. The when it has been on for a while, it seems to work perfectly. Other times not so much. The foot control on this unit is the original large square platform and has a retractable cord. I have taken that whole assembly apart, cleaned the contact plate washers on the cord retractor portion, as well as taken the actual electronic switch apart and cleaned the contacts on it. This also seemed to help off the get-go but then I turned the machine off for an hour and back on and the same problems. Sometimes if I quickly engage the foot control switch, it works. But if I start slow and gradually depress to faster it does not respond and if I do tune to hold it down it seems to gradually increase in speed by a step at a time every 5 seconds or so until it reaches full speed.  Any thoughts on this? I am thinking it is just that little contact module inside the switch that is maybe causing the issue. Do you think I could try a generic electronic foot controller on this? Thanks,  Darcy

A foot controller is a simple speed controller
Any generic make that has the same specifications will do the job
Have you done a proper continuity check on the lead as it indicates broken wires in the cord

Because you say all was working for a while before this latest event, it will be the supressor that has failed, they are generally in the foot control (some machines have them in the main body near the power inlet) and it needs to be removed, it only stops interference to Radio & TV and is not necessary for correct function...............your nose will tell you if it is in foot pedal or inside the machine..

Unplug from mains, undo cover/s and find the electronic looking item which is cracked, burnt & probably oozing brown goo and smelling like burned plastic only worse.... Simply remove this from the circuit, clean the region with some denatured spirit, methanol or similar, wait until completely dry and re-assemble....this should fix the problem of the machine "running on" by itself....as to whether you have done a good job of the initial electrical repair, only you will know that.

By the way, how's the dog ? Guess the machine was not plugged in at the time !!

SOURCE: Needle doesn't move the problem isn't the foot pedal

Same problem with my 400. I took it in to dealer and they said main computer board on my machine would have to be replaced. Fortunately, they agreed to get it fixed for me. My machine is 2 years old. How old is yours? I wonder if this could be a manufacturer defect on the machine? Maybe this needs to be addressed with Viking Husqvarna Corporate.

SOURCE: Machine slows down, stops, starts again. Foot control problem?

Yes it does sound like a faulty foot control. The power cord is probably fine, you just need the controller. Ebay is a good source for parts.

Janome My Excel 23x threading, stitching, tension problems. Sometimes I get the machine going for a while (with great messing about) then it all goes awry again.

when anything gets frustrating to use and is costing money , the idea is to junk it and get a new one
Buying brand name is not wise as what was good long time ago can now be rubbish
I would suggest that you spend time going to dress making meetings and get an idea from the rest as to what would be a good machine to look at
Price is not a criteria for quality, neither is weight
The major criterias should be how often it has to be repaired , parts accessibility , ease of personal maintenance and lastly the availability of a workshop manual to carry out minor adjustments

The plastic gear in the 6010 Viking is cracked and I'd like to replace it.

Have you searched the internet?

If you are unable to find instructions, perhaps you can find an independent sewing machine repair person who would be willing to do it for you.

My Designer 1 sewing machine touch screen is frozen and won't calibrate or respond to touching. This is intermittent behavior. Sometimes it works, and sometimes not. Can you tell me what this is

Sounds to me like the plug-in connector from the screen is not firmly attached to the motherboard (directly behind the screen but inside the machine). This kind of problem doesn't take a factory trained technician. Ask various sewing machine dealers to whom they subcontract cleaning and adjustment. Ask people who sew whether they have the name of a repair person. Taking apart the machine and replugging the connection should be all of a 15 minute job.

I have a brother sewing machine working on 220 v . i curently live in Dubai U.A.E and planning to move to canada, can this machine work there? i know they have 110v there. can i convert mine to a 110 v....

I would suggest finding a travel adapter for the voltage. I moved from the US to the UK for a while and used an electric travel adapter for my singer machine for the time I lived there. It functioned very, very well.

I hope you enjoy Canada. It has some beautiful country there. I know I, personally, welcome you to the Western Hemisphere, Samira!

I took my machine to be 'cleaned', and when I get it back the pressure foot has no pressure. I'm in Jacksonville FL and cannot find anyone that repairs Pfaff sewing machines (1473 CD). I need some help!

Independent repair shops will work on any model, it's the parts they have no control of. The good thing is that we have ebay, where most hard to find parts always pop up. All or 95% of sewing machine stores here in Bay Area Ca. sell and service PFAFF, even vintage metal mechanical models.
